Box Score KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Kenyon College women's tennis team ran the show against Rhodes College on Monday evening, landing a fourth straight victory after sweeping the Lynx (5-3). The Owls cruised overall to down Rhodes 7-0, but Kenyon still had to show its toughness to prevail in a couple of tough matches at the Oak Street Park Sports Complex.
Kenyon's fourth straight win, all of which have been by 7-0 margins, ran the Owls' record to 5-3. The team also improved to 4-1 over the course of its spring break trip, and Kenyon has two more chances to close out its Florida campaign on a high note with the second half of a streak of four straight days of play on deck.
All three doubles matchups between the Owls and the Lynx were competitive, with the competition ramping up higher up the ladder. At No. 1 doubles, Eleni Lazaridou and Hana Nouaime needed a tiebreak to decide the matchup against Gracie Rask and Emma McHale. The Owls locked in and closed out the win in the extra frame, prevailing 7-3 in the tiebreak to clinch the 7-6 decision. Though the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches left a little more breathing room, the teams were still only separated by five combined points. Shadia Amado Aguad and Clare Hudson had success at No. 2 with a 6-4 victory, while Lalasa Nagireddy and Maggie Shope secured a 6-3 win in the No. 3 spot.
Kenyon built upon the momentum of hard-fought doubles wins in singles play as the Owls won five of the six matches in straight sets. Hudson had the largest individual margin of victory, winning 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 bout. Amado Aguad and Nagireddy were not far behind in the Nos. 2 and 5 matches, respectively, as they posted a pair of 6-1, 6-1 decisions. Shope secured the second zero of singles play when she sent off her No. 6 opponent 6-4, 6-0.
As usual, Lazaridou held down the top spot in the lineup. The junior won 6-2, 6-3 for her fifth straight singles victory.
Nouaime's No. 5 match was the lone contest that needed a third set, but she finished strong to secure Kenyon's sweep. The first-year landed the first blow with a 6-3 set-one win, but she had to bounce back after falling 6-4 in the second stanza. In the tiebreak, Nouaime closed out the tightly contested win, prevailing 10-8.
