Owls upend No. 7-ranked Tartans

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Gaining a measure of revenge for an earlier-season loss to Carnegie Mellon University, the No. 14-ranked Kenyon College women's tennis team upset the No. 7-ranked Tartans on Saturday inside the Jasper Tennis Center.

Playing to the clinching point, Kenyon won doubles play and then took three of the first four singles matches to finish. That gave the host Owls a 4-1 victory and evened out the season series between the two teams. Back on March 4, Carnegie Mellon defeated Kenyon, 5-2, in a match played in Orlando, Florida.

Saturday's match marked the end of the regular season for the Owls, and it also marked Senior Day. Prior to playing, the team did a brief presentation to honor its two senior members, Shadia Amado Aguad and Eleni Lazaridou.

When it came time to play, both those seniors got Kenyon started on the right foot. Lazaridou paired up with Hana Nouaime to record a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles against Carnegie Mellon's team of Kotistha Modak and Ika Kanumuri. Then, at No. 2 doubles, Amado Aguad joined up with Kiara Komlodi to post a 7-5 win against Ancele Dolensek and Victoria Gazda.

In singles play, Nouaime kept momentum on Kenyon's side, as she delivered a quick 6-0, 6-4 win against Shelly Zinchenko in the No. 3 match. Komlodi backed that up with another Kenyon win at No. 2 singles, where she defeated Jane Wong, 7-5, 6-2.

Carnegie Mellon (15-5) picked up its lone point of the match with a win at No. 4 singles, but Lazaridou tallied the clinching point for the Owls at No. 1. In that match, the Kenyon senior finished off Kanumuri, 7-6, 6-3 to run her personal season record to 15-6.

Kenyon (16-5) will now turn its focus to the six-team North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, which will be held on Kenyon's campus. The start of the tournament begins with quarterfinal rounds on Friday. Semifinals will be Saturday and the final match will be Sunday.
The Owls, as the tournament's No. 1 seed, get a bye in the quarterfinal round and will start postseason play in Saturday's semifinal round.
