OBERLIN, Ohio- The Kenyon College field hockey team broke into the win column on Tuesday evening, notching its first victory of the 2025 season in dramatic fashion. Behind a dominant offensive display and a standout performance on defense, the Owls opened the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) with a 1-0 shutout over Oberlin College.
Â
Kenyon (1-5, 1-0 NCAC) controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, pressuring the Oberlin back line with consistent possession and shot opportunities. The Owls tallied 18 shots, including nine on target while the Yeowomen managed just six attempts and only two on goal across 60 minutes.
Â
The breakthrough finally came through in the final minute of the second quarter. After multiple stops near the half line, first-year
Henny Maher took it upon herself to drive the ball into the final third, passing through two opponents and threading a crisp pass into space for
Maren Lawrence, who slotted a first-time low shot into the goal securing her second of the season and Maher's first career assist.
Â
From there, the Owls' back line and goalkeeper
Sofia Chaves held firm. Chaves earned her first clean sheet of the season and needed just one save to secure the win. The defense stayed organized through Oberlin's attempts on goal in the second and third quarter.
Â
On the opposite end, Jenny McCormick was tested repeatedly and kept Oberlin within striking distance. The senior finished with five saves on six shots faced, denying multiple efforts from Lawrence, who finished the contest with 10 shots, five of which were on target.
Â
Up next, the Owls will look to build on their momentum as they continue their road stretch with a trip to Swarthmore College on Saturday, September 20, at 1:00 p.m.
