Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Early Swarthmore barrage sinks Kenyon

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore College Garnet didn't waste any time Saturday in deciding the outcome of its field hockey game with the Kenyon College Owls. Three first-quarter goals gave the host team all the separation it needed, as it rolled to a 4-0 non-conference victory over Kenyon.

The Garnet (3-5) tested Kenyon sophomore goalkeeper Sofia Chaves right from the start, firing off two shots in the first two minutes of play. Two minutes after that, Swarthmore netted its first goal, which came from Erin Coyle and was set up by Hayley Harris.

About seven minutes into the game, Kenyon recorded its first shot, one that came from first-year Henny Maher, but was saved by Swarthmore goalkeeper Cassandra Conklin. The Garnet took possession, went down the field and then scored their second goal one minute later. This time it was Sarah Cooper who took a pass from Gabriella Vasquez and deflected the ball over the Kenyon line.

At that point, the Owls decided on a goalie switch and put in first-year Lucy Baker to replace Chaves. That, however, didn't stop the Swarthmore momentum. The Garnet tacked on one more tally as Magdelana Jordan picked up a rebound and poked it into the Kenyon cage with a little more than four minutes left in the half.

Kenyon was out-shot by Swarthmore 9-1 in the half and 26-1 for the game. Penalty corners were also dominated by the Garnet, who amassed a 17-4 advantage during the 60 minutes of game time.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Garnet put home their final score. Following a high shot from Liza Semenenko and a save from Baker, the rebound was scooped up by Annika Hoyer, who worked her way from the left side to the right side before launching her shot.

Baker, who wound up playing about 52 minutes in front of the Kenyon cage, finished the game with nine saves.

The Owls (1-6) will remain in Pennsylvania tomorrow and will head to Bryn Mawr College to play, at noon, their final non-conference contest of the season.
