Muskingum turns back Kenyon’s best shots

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- The back line of the Muskingum University volleyball team made all the difference while the host Fighting Muskies dealt the visiting Kenyon College Owls a 25-12, 25-14, 25-12 non-conference defeat Wednesday night at Performance Court.

Kenyon, now with a 1-9 record, threw a total of 101 attack attempts at the Fighting Muskies, who responded with 64 digs. That stingy Muskingum defense allowed room for just 15 kills, a season-low for the Owls, whose top two threats, Olivia Gumz and Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese, combined for six kills.

Leading the way for the Kenyon attack was junior Sophia Menke who logged five kills. Rumpca-Veronese, who came into the contest averaging a little more than 10 kills a match, contributed in other areas Wednesday night, recording four digs, three assists, two aces, and one block.

Other leaders for Kenyon included senior Maggie Wolf, who had a team-high eight assists, and junior Lauren Blakemore, who had a team-high nine digs. Senior Juliette Tomamichel and first-year Kendall Kirkbride tied for the team lead with two blocks apiece.

On the other side of the court, Muskingum, which improved to 8-4 with the victory, racked up a total of 46 kills throughout the three sets. Mackenzie Krous led the way with nine. Meanwhile, on that Muskingum back row, Krous picked up 15 kills and was only surpassed by teammate Katharine Clayton, who posted 16 digs.

With Kenyon struggling to exert its offense, the Owls held a lead, or a share of the lead, for only a small portion of the competition. Muskingum used a 10-0 run to claim set one without yielding the lead. In set two, Kenyon twice tied up the Fighting Muskies, but another big Muskingum run, this one an 8-1 tear, was the difference maker.

The third and final set unfolded in a similar fashion. Early on, Kenyon took two leads and twice tied the score, however, Muskingum flipped a one-point deficit into a 17-8 lead with 10 straight points.

The Owls have just a day to recuperate. Friday, they'll head to Jacksonville, Illinois to compete in the two-day Illinois College Invitational.
