Belova becomes program’s first-ever medalist

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- In just the second tournament in program history, the Kenyon College women's golf team has its first medalist. Monday, first-year Sasha Belova finished atop a field of 49 golfers and led the Owls to a third-place team finish in Allegheny College's Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational.

Belova played the first round of the two-round tournament at two-over par, posting a 73 and sharing the lead with two other golfers at the midway point. When she returned to the Country Club of Meadville for the tournament's second round, Belova fired a one-under 71 to claim sole possession of first place.

Belova's first round, played Sunday, consisted of two bogeys, a double bogey, and two birdies. In Monday's second and final round she carded two bogeys and three birdies.

With Belova leading the way, the Owls put up a team score of 335 on Sunday, which put them in fourth place, and then a 325 on Monday, which moved them into third place with a final stroke count of 660. Carnegie Mellon University won the eight-team tournament with a total of 593 strokes and Wittenberg University placed second with a final total of 638.

Backing up Belova's play for Kenyon was Jane Fanning, also a first-year. She shot a 79 on Sunday and came back with a 78 on Monday. Her two-day total of 157 was good for a tie for eighth place on the individual leaderboard.

Kenyon's two other scoring golfers were first-years Camryn Nelson and Macy Printy. Nelson shot 90 and then 87, while Printy put up a 93 and then a 90. Nelson's two-day total of 177 landed her in 25th place, while Printy's 183 put her in 30th place.

The Kenyon team will return to competition in two weeks, playing in the Tartan Invitational hosted by Carnegie Mellon.
