Owls take second at NCACs to conclude inaugural season

VIENNA, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's golf team wrapped up play at the program's first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship on Sunday from Avalon Golf & Country Club, competing amongst a field of seven teams for three rounds.

The Owls took second overall with a final score of 103 over par, but Rafa Plasa and Sasha Belova were the big winners for Kenyon, taking first and second respectively after a tiebreaking playoff to top the field of 35 at 14 over par.

Plasa started the weekend ahead, shooting 76 in a rainy round one that took two days to complete. She holed two birdies on the back nine to rebound nicely after a five over first nine. Belova carded a 77 in her opening 18 and birdied each par three.

In Saturday's second round, Plasa shot the co-lowest round of the tournament, a one over 73. She made three birdies in four holes on the front nine and went even on the back with another circle on the card. Belova shot a 75 (+3) for her second 18, making three birdies and also going even on the back nine.

Belova delivered the better final round, making two birdies en route to a 78, while Plasa matched with back-to-back circles on the front nine, ending the tournament with an 81. After 54 holes, the first-year pair was tied at 14 over par, sparking a sudden-death playoff for first place. They each made par in the first hole, but a five on the 17th earned Plasa her first career win and medalist honors. With the pair of top five finishes, Plasa and Belova also earned spots on the NCAC All-Tournament Team.

Camryn Nelson was next to finish for Kenyon, shooting +23 to take ninth, her fifth top ten of the season. She carded two birdies in round one and ended at 80, adding one more in round two for an 82. The final round was Nelson's best, adding two more birdies on two par threes and ending at 77 (+5).

In 24th individually was Jane Fanning, who opened play with two birdies and an 88, which would be her best round for the tournament. She shot 90 in both the third and fourth rounds, making one birdie in the 36 holes to shoot +52.

Macy Printy rounded out the Owls squad, finishing at 29th individually at +66. She made one birdie in her first round and shot 95, backing it up with another circle for a 93 in round two, her best of the weekend. Printy ended the weekend with a 94.

As a team, Kenyon finished second in par three scoring (3.62) and par four scoring (4.53), while leading the event in total birdies made at 25. Belova paced the field in par three scoring (3.08) and was third in par four scoring (4.27). Plasa was second in par four scoring at 4.23 and tied for second at the par fives (5.17)

Denison University came away victorious with an impressive +78 mark. DePauw University (+104) finished just behind Kenyon for third, while Wittenberg University (+146) and host John Carroll University (+164) rounded out the top five.
