Kenyon tramples Transy, remains perfect in conference

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After picking up its first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win of the season two weeks ago, the Kenyon College field hockey team stayed perfect on Saturday afternoon against Transylvania University on the road.

Fueled by strong outings from Maren Lawrence and first-year Henny Maher, the Owls had no issues turning in its second conference win of the season, dispatching the Pioneers 7-0.

Maher got things going early for Kenyon (2-7, 2-0 NCAC), finding the back of the net at 7:41 in the first quarter. After a scrap in front of the goal led to a loose ball, Maher gathered possession and slung one past the Pioneers keeper for the early lead.

In the second quarter, Maher was the benefactor of a great passing play that ran the length of the whole field. The defense fired a pass from around mid-field that was corralled near the arc, and tic-tac-toe'd its way to Maher who beat her defender with a nifty move and buried the 2-0 goal. The tallies are the first two goals of her career.

The Owls turned it up in the third quarter, thanks to two more goals from Maren Lawrence. Gigi Johnson rifled a ball from the top of the arc that was knocked away by the Transylvania keeper, but bounced right to Lawrence who quickly batted it home at 10:55 in the third.

Three minutes later, Kenyon forced a turnover in their offensive zone and drove right down the field for another Lawrence goal to push the lead to 4-0 and add her third and fourth goals of the year to lead the team.

The fourth also belonged to the visiting Owls, as the team poured in three more goals. Abby Golub converted on a penalty shot to put her team up 5-0, while Lawrence added to her big day with a hat trick with five minutes to play. Casey Master put the finishing touches on the win with her first goal of the season to set the 7-0 final.

On the game, Kenyon outshot Transylvania 20-4 and held a 10-2 edge in corners. Sofia Chaves got the nod in net and had two saves to turn in her third career shutout.

Next up, the Owls will host Washington and Jefferson on Saturday, October 4 at noon for the conference home opener at the Field at Benson Bowl.
