Owls take down NCAC leader DePauw

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College field hockey team (6-8, 5-3) took down the Tigers from DePauw University on Sunday afternoon in a 3-1 conference win. DePauw (9-4, 7-1) came into the matchup as an undefeated team in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play and was tied with Denison University for first-place in the NCAC standings.

A well-organized and disciplined team, DePauw scores an average of 3.17 goals per game while limiting opponents to 1.42. Needless to say, the game was a highly competitive battle between these two teams, with everyone needing to pull their weight.

The Tigers kicked off the scoring for the game during the second quarter when a save from Owls goalkeeper, Sofia Chaves, bounced back out onto the stick of DePauw forward Hannah Zaiser. Zaiser netted the ball home during the 21st minute, putting the Tigers up, 1-0.

Five minutes later, the Owls tied up the game at the 25:27 minute mark. Hendrika Maher was able to get a centering pass off after being trapped into the corner by DePauw defenders. Senior forward Gigi Johnson tapped the ball towards the near post for a waiting Abby Golub to sneak it past the Tigers' goalkeeper.

The Owls scored once more before heading into the second half. This time, Alexandra Dineen put one away after Maren Lawrence, with help from Golub, sent the ball towards the back post. Dineen, playing in all 14 games of the season, celebrated her first collegiate goal as an Owl.

During the third quarter, Hendrika Maher would score the third and final goal for the Owls. After a penalty corner began, Johnson passed the ball towards the back post for Maher. Maher initially hit the post but followed up her own shot to net the goal at 37:03, pushing the Owls to lead, 3-1.

The Owls defense, led by Natalia Aguilar-Ripley, Ariana Rowe, and Ada Wigfield, managed to fend off a remarkable 12 penalty corners from the Tigers, and Chaves came out to record six saves.

Offensively, Kenyon outshot DePauw, 15-10, and put nine of those on frame. Maher led the team with four shots, two of which were on target. She also now leads the team in goals, with seven, and points, with 15.

After today's stellar team performance, Kenyon is seeded fourth in conference with two games left to go of regular season play.

The Owls get a much needed break until next weekend Saturday, October 24 when they go on the road to play John Carroll University at 3:00 p.m.
