Owls ring up double-overtime win at JCU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Kenyon College field hockey team had a difficult time getting shots past John Carroll University goalkeeper Ellison Hilgendorf on Saturday afternoon. The Owls, however, did manage to tie the game at 1-1 in the third quarter and then won it with a goal from sophomore Hendrika Maher in double-overtime.

Kenyon (7-8, 6-3 NCAC) came out firing, putting up eight shots and earning four corners in the first quarter of play. John Carroll, which did not record a shot or a corner in the quarter, managed to keep Kenyon off the scoreboard, mainly due to six saves from Hilgendorf.

Hilgendorf then made three more saves to start the second quarter and, when the Blue Streaks finally got some offensive push, they made the most of it. Recording the team's first shot of the game, Kierra Maxie moved just inside the circle and fired a bullet into the lower left corner of the Kenyon cage.

Despite out-shooting John Carroll 11-1 over the course of the first half, the Owls went into intermission trailing 1-0.

Right around three minutes into the second half, things changed for Kenyon. Using a penalty corner, the Owls tallied their first goal of the game. The insert came from Ada Wigfield and went to Gigi Johnson at the top of the circle. Johnson then passed to her left, finding Casey Master, who beat Hilgendorf to her right side. The goal was Master's fifth of the season and the assist was Johnson's team-leading fourth of the season.

John Carroll (6-10, 4-6 NCAC) made the second half a little more competitive, but neither team was able to score for the remainder of regulation.

When the game went into overtime, it was once again the Owls offense against Hilgendorf. Kenyon peppered the John Carroll cage with eight more shots, but Hilgendorf was always in the right spot at the right time, making seven more saves throughout the first overtime session.

In the second overtime, with 4:21 left on the clock, a John Carroll defender tried to clear the ball out of the Blue Streaks circle, but committed a foul. Maher, who was the Kenyon player that drew the foul, quickly reset and took an open shot from the middle of the circle and beat Hilgendorf to the lower left corner again. The goal was Maher's team-leading eighth of the season and snapped a brief three-game losing skid for the Owls.

Overall, Kenyon out-shot John Carroll 27-6 and Hilgendorf made 17 saves.

The win puts Kenyon in a position to control its own destiny. A win next Saturday at home against The College of Wooster puts the Owls in the four-team North Coast Athletic Conference postseason tournament.
