CLEVELAND– For the second time this season, and the fifth time in his Kenyon College career, junior
Jonathan Oakes was named the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Men's Golf Athlete of the Week.
The recognition comes after Oakes paced the Owls with an impressive showing at the NCAA Fall Preview in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. Against a competitive field of 120 golfers, Oakes finished the three-round tournament at one-under par, tying for 11th overall with four others.
His opening round on Mission Inn's Las Colinas course set the stage. After playing even through the front nine, Oakes rebounded from a bogey on hole ten with a remarkable stretch that included back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15, an eagle on the 299-yard par-four 17th, and another birdie on 18. That late surge propelled him to a four-under 67.
Shifting to El Campeon for the final two rounds, Oakes posted a 75 (+3) in round two, highlighted by a pair of birdies, before closing with an even-par 72. His final round featured two more birdies and an eagle on the 500-yard par-five opening hole.
Looking at the leaderboard, Oakes stood out from the crowd. He tied for first in par-three scoring (-2), tied for sixth in par-five scoring (-5), and led all golfers with two eagles.
