Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Slow start dooms Owls’ chances against Tigers

GAMBIER, Ohio -- A frigid start to Saturday's game at Tomsich Arena put the Kenyon College men's basketball team in a hole it couldn't get out of. The Owls, who trailed 15-2 after the first six minutes of play, eventually fell to the DePauw University Tigers, 85-66.

The Owls missed their first four, and seven of their first eight, shots of the game. The misfires, coupled with two missed free throws, two fouls, and two turnovers, left the Kenyon team trailing by 13 points.

A three-pointer from Marius Mazeika, followed by a put-back from Jackson Burke, pulled the Owls within eight points with 12:12 left, but that would be as close as the they would get for the remainder of the first period.

Mazeika had 12 points at the half, and Burke had 10, but Kenyon's shooting struggles and a minus-12 mark in rebounding, buried the Owls, 43-27, at the intermission.

Kenyon shot the ball much better in the second half and even pulled within 10 points at the 16:07 mark. Over the first four minutes of the second half, Mazeika and Burke combined for all 12 points in a Kenyon 12-6 run.

DePauw, however, came right back with back-to-back three pointers and never let the Owls get closer than 16 points the rest of the way. With that hefty lead, the Tigers continued their dominance on the glass, outrebounding Kenyon 46-24 for the game.

Mazeika ended up shooting 9-of-13 overall and racked up a game-high 23 points. Burke went 6-for-10, scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to log his fourth double-double of the season. Burke's stat line also included three assists, three blocked shots, and a couple of steals.

Kenyon's only other double-digit scorer was Nick Valentino, who pumped in 10 points in seven minutes of work.

DePauw, which nearly shot 50 percent (31-of-63), had four double-digit scorers, including Sam Jacobs and Caleb Washington. Those two tied for the team lead with 14 points apiece, while Joe Smith connected for 11 points and Patrick Joyce scored 10.

The win for the Tigers snapped their losing streak at three and improved their records to 12-6 overall and 5-4 within North Coast Athletic Conference play.

The loss for Kenyon evened out the Owls' overall record a 9-9 and dropped their conference mark to 3-6.
