Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Owls fall, 2-0, in first home game under lights

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Playing, for the first time, under the newly-installed lights on The Field at Benson Bowl, the Kenyon College field hockey team put up a strong fight against a heavily-favored Denison University team. The Owls had their moments, but in the end, dropped a 2-0 conference contest to the visiting Big Red.

Denison, now 10-2 overall and 6-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play, came into the Thursday evening game riding a nine-game win streak and having outscored its last six opponents by a combined count of 31-1.

Kenyon, now 5-7 overall and 4-3 in the NCAC, ran up and down the field with the Big Red, applied pressure at times, and never really counted itself out of the game.

After a scoreless first quarter, Denison broke through with the first tally. Less than two minutes into the second quarter, Denison's Emma Gebhart fired a shot that was blocked by a Kenyon defender. The ricochet, however, bounced over to Reilly Desmond who had an open goal to shoot at, as Kenyon goalkeeper Sofia Chaves was out of position trying to make the save on the initial Gebhart shot.

The 1-0 Denison lead held up through halftime and for a little more than seven minutes into the third quarter. At that point, Denison tried to work the ball into the Kenyon circle. One pass made its way through, bounced off a couple of players and landed on the stick of Lulu Keil, who fired in her 14th goal of the season, doubling the Big Red advantage.

Less than a minute after that goal, Denison was awarded a penalty stroke, but Chaves kept the score locked where it was after stopping the point-blank strike from Keil.

Kenyon was outshot 10-0 in the first half of play, but made the proper adjustments in the second half, logging five shots and, at times, putting the Big Red on their heels.

Chaves, who played the entire game in front of the Kenyon cage, wound up making eight saves.

The Owls have little to no break, as they'll line up back on Benson Bowl for a Friday game against Sewanee. That contest kicks off at 4:30 p.m.
