Owls struggle against Tigers' offense

GAMBIER, Ohio — Family Weekend's field hockey non-conference matchup between Kenyon College (5-8, 4-3) and the Sewanee Tigers (8-4, 1-1) ended in a 4-1 loss for the Owls.

The Tigers' offensive threat was apparent from the first draw. During the game, they racked up a whopping 17 shots, with 9 of those on target. Sewanee was particularly impressive in the third period, in which the team managed to get eight shots off and score two of its goals.

Kenyon goalkeeper, Sofia Chaves, did well in the first period, saving the first on-target shot of the game that came at the 8 minute-mark. She went on to make 5 saves in the game for the Owls as well as adjust to several other dangerous plays.

The offense for Kenyon showed a lot of fight in the second half of the game, in which they recorded all six of their shots. They proved they aren't a team that goes away without a true fight as they battled back and forth for offensive control.

The Owls were able to rebound in the fourth period with a late goal in the 59th minute by Gigi Johnson, assisted by Abby Golub. Hendrika Maher went on the counter-attack and found the stick of Golub right on top of the shooting circle. Golub quickly found Johnson on a diagonal run, who slotted the ball past Sewanee goalkeeper, Ryleigh Cabral.

The Owls will return home on Sunday, October 18 for a conference game against DePauw University.
