NCAC recognizes Maher’s efforts at OWU

CLEVELAND -- Last Wednesday, sophomore Hendrika Maher scored two goals in the Kenyon College field hockey team's 3-0 win at Ohio Wesleyan University. Tuesday, the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) announced that Maher was the pick for its Athlete of the Week honor.

With Kenyon holding a slim 1-0 lead at halftime of the conference contest, Maher whipped up a couple of insurance goals to seal the deal for the Owls. A little more than 10 minutes into the third quarter, she split two defenders and fired home the team's second goal of the game.

Less than three minutes after that, Maher struck again. During a penalty corner, teammate Casey Master fired a shot near the right post. It was deflected by an Ohio Wesleyan defender and bounced near the goal line. Maher, who took just two shots throughout the game, was in position to tap it in for another Kenyon score.

Maher has played in all 11 games for the Owls (5-6, 4-2 NCAC) and started 10 of them. With the addition of Wednesday's two goals, she leads the team with season totals of six goals and 13 points.

Maher and the Owls' next test will be Thursday at home against conference-leading Denison University. That game, scheduled for a 6 p.m. start on The Field at Benson Bowl, will be the first at Kenyon to be played under lights.
