Owls to host Big Red in first game under lights

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The summertime installation of lights surrounding The Field at Benson Bowl gives Kenyon College athletics the opportunity to expand the day and schedule home contests beyond the usual late-afternoon to early-evening start times.

The first of those opportunities to play under the lights is slated for Thursday, October 15, when the Owls field hockey team will take on Denison University in an important North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest that will get underway at 6 p.m.

Kenyon enters the game with a 5-6 overall record, including a 4-2 mark within NCAC play. Denison, owners of a 9-2 record and a 5-0 NCAC mark, is on a roll, having won nine straight since opening the season with two losses.

Before the game, a few promotions will be carried out, including the distribution of a free commemorative rally towel, as well as free ice cream being served by Round Hill Dairy Ice Cream from nearby Mount Vernon.

The Field at Benson Bowl is home to not only the field hockey team, but the the men's and women's lacrosse teams.

"The expanded options we have now for scheduling games and practices at Benson are going to make a huge difference both in the athletic and academic arenas," said Jason Imeperati, Kenyon's Director of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation. "The addition of lights provides the flexibility to schedule home contests at times that better align with our academic mission. By moving more competitions outside of class hours, our student-athletes will miss less class while still having greater access to Benson."

The installation, completed by Musco Sports Lighting, included four, 80-foot light towers, two each on the east and west sides of the field. Each light tower contains a configuration of eight TLC-LED-1500 light fixtures with shielding that forces light downward to prevent sky glow. Additionally, the poles and fixtures were positioned precisely for cross-over lighting, a process that deters glare.
