Owls open conference with hard-fought draw

GAMBIER, OH — The Kenyon faithful showed out this afternoon from Mavec Field for the first conference match of the season, as the Kenyon College women's soccer team (4-1-5) took on Denison University (4-2-3). The contest, built on tradition, competitive play, and long standing rivalry, was a hard fought affair that ended in a well-earned 0-0 draw on both sides.

The two teams appeared evenly matched in nearly every way. The Owls attempted 16 shots — Big Red answered back with 15. Kenyon had five chances come by way of the corner kick — Denison attained four chances of their own. Even the overall possession for the game was a perfect 50/50 stat line.

Maia Pasco led the Owls offense in shot attempts and shots on goal, with five and three, respectively. Both Rafaela Plasa and Mia Voutsinas hit the crossbar on dangerously close shots, proving their offensive power. Emily Copeland added to the dangerous attack in the final minutes of the game as she made Denison keeper, Caroline Hauge, stretch out in the 88th for what appeared at first as a top-corner screamer.

The Owls veteran defense, led by Georgia Yatrakis, Hannah Schmidt, Fiona Dougherty, and Chanda Maambo, remained compact and composed under the pressure of the Denison attack. Both keepers for Kenyon, Ariel Kite and Lila Michael, made a number of great saves to earn the clean sheet, with Kite stopping four and Michael preventing a season-high six.

The match was incredibly closely contested all the way through, with both squads giving it everything they had.

The Owls will return to Mavec Field on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. for the next round of conference play against Ohio Wesleyan University.
