Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Copeland late goal propels Owls to victory

GAMBIER, OH – The Kenyon College women's soccer team (5-1-5) took on the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University (3-6-4) for the second conference game of the year. A late goal from junior forward Emily Copeland pushed the Owls to a 1-0 victory during the Tuesday afternoon contest at Mavec Field.

The first half was a narrow clash between the two squads. Both teams did a good job of creating chances, yet, neither group managed to convert with a goal.

Ohio Wesleyan's keeper, Payton Beard, did well in net, saving three shots on frame, including one coming at the two-minute mark by Mia Voutsinas.

Both defenses were playing quite well going into the second half. For the first twenty-five minutes of the second half, possession went back and forth as neither team was able to create a shot attempt on goal.

Everything changed at the 71-minute mark. That's when Copeland, who had been applying great pressure all match, finally got past Beard to score the only goal of the match. After a turnover caused the Owls' midfield to pick up possession of the ball, Copeland fired a shot off to the lower left corner which dinked in off the left post and into the back of the net.

From there, Kenyon's momentum did not yield. The Owls took three more shot attempts and created a corner kick opportunity, but ultimately, the Battling Bishops were able to hold the Owls to just one goal behind some good defense.

The Owls managed to earn their first win of conference play this season, having not lost a match since September 13, and are seated second in conference with four points. Next up, the Kenyon women are on the road this Saturday as they take on Oberlin College at 6 p.m.
