Skelly delivers game winner in season opener

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team opened its 2026 season on Saturday afternoon, taking on the University of Mount Union on the road for a non-conference test.

After the Owls took a four goal lead near the end of the third quarter, the Purple Raiders mounted a comeback to tie the game with 3:06 to play. Charlotte Skelly came through in the clutch to deliver the game winning goal with 2:10 remaining, giving Kenyon the win to open the season.

Elena Zuvekas opened the scoring for the visitors at 14:06, who rattled off a 4-0 run to start the game. Less than 30 seconds later, Lily Mason netted her first goal of the season with an assist from Skelly. Skelly got a goal of her own at 11:40, assisted by Ashley Quinn, and Zuvekas capped off the run with another tally at 4:56. Mount Union snuck in a goal just before the end of the quarter, setting Kenyon up 4-1 after 15 minutes.

The Owls regained a four goal lead at 11:08 in the second, when Zuvekas completed the early hat trick. The Purple Raiders took control in the second quarter, charging to a 4-0 run of their own to tie the game at five with 43 seconds to play in the half. Ashley Auerbach restored the Kenyon lead with a score with 12 seconds in the half, sending her team to the break up 6-5.

In the third quarter, three straight Owls goals restored a comfortable four goal lead. Spencer Kirsch and Delaney Champeau each scored on free position attempts, while Skelly netted her second goal of the game. At 2:44, Kenyon was once again up 9-5, but in a similar fashion to the first half, Mount Union responded with a run.

The Purple Raiders ended the third quarter and opened the fourth with four straight goals, spanning nearly 14 minutes of game time. After the home team's goal at 3:06 to play to tie the game 9-9, the Owls won the draw control and had a nice possession on offense, leading to Skelly's third goal of the day, the eventual game winner.

Skelly led the team with four points by way of three goals and an assist. Zuvekas was not far behind with a hat trick of her own, while Zuvekas also led the team with three ground balls. Mason finished the day strong on defense, causing three turnovers and controlling three draws, leading the team. Meagan Lacombe totaled four saves in the cage at a .308 save percentage.

Up next, Kenyon will head back to Gambier for the team's home opener on Saturday, February 28 at 1:00 p.m., where the team will host Baldwin Wallace University.
