Owls' home opener spoiled by Yellow Jackets' comeback

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team looked sharp through the first 25 minutes of action on Saturday as the team hosted Baldwin Wallace University for its 2026 home opener from the Field at Benson Bowl.

Despite building a sizable lead early, the Owls offense went cold in the second half and due to several penalties that left the team shorthanded, the Yellow Jackets were able to battle back and eventually steal the game 12-11, scoring the game winner with 12 seconds to play.

Kenyon (1-1) was firing on all cylinders to start the contest after scoring 10 goals in the team's season opener against Mount Union. Spencer Kirsch got things started with a goal just over 30 seconds in, and two more from Lily Mason put the Owls up 3-1 after 15 minutes.

Kirsch scored twice more followed by another tally from Mason to give both players hat tricks at 11:34 in the second, boosting the advantage to 6-1. To close the half, however, Baldwin Wallace (2-0) outscored Kenyon 4-1 to take a 7-5 lead to the break.

After halftime was when the tides began to turn for the Yellow Jackets. Baldwin Wallace crept within one goal just over a minute into the third, and despite two more goals from Mason and Kirch, the visitors added two more of their own to end the third trailing 8-9. The Owls also got into some penalty trouble near the end of the quarter, committing five penalties including a red card that would carry into the fourth.

The Yellow Jackets tied the game at nine for the first time since 0-0 on a woman-up goal at 12:46 in the fourth. Ashley Quinn came back with her first goal of the season to regain the lead at 7:17, a score which would stand until late in the game.

Two more woman-up goals from Baldwin Wallace, one at 3:13 and the second at 1:23, gave the visitors their first lead of the contest at 11-10. Kirsch and the Owls scored with 31 seconds remaining to tie the game at 11, but Yellow Jackets' leading scorer Claire Alic netted the game winner with just 12 seconds to play, her seventh goal of the game.

Kirsch led Kenyon with five goals, while Mason had four. Skelly's two assists put her third on the team with two points, while Quinn and Anna Reif each added goals. Meagan Lacombe made seven saves in net at a .368 mark, while as a team the Owls outshot BW 18-13 in shots on goal and held a 15-12 edge in ground balls.

Kenyon will now head out west for a two game road trip to Colorado, where the Owls will take on St. John Fisher University on Tuesday, March 3 at 4:00 p.m. EST from Colorado Springs.
