Owls fall on Cardinals' last second score in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the second time in as many games, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team found itself in a tight contest down the stretch, as the Owls took on St. John Fisher University on a neutral field to start the team's two-game stint in Colorado.

Kenyon was unfortunately victim of heartbreak again, and after battling back from two goals down in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals netted the game winner with just three seconds on the clock to take the 11-10 victory.

The contest was close from the start, but each offense started off slower compared to later in the game. St. John Fisher was first to strike, scoring the first two goals at 13:41 and 12:46 in the opener. The Owls responded with two of their own in just a minute later, as Lily Mason converted a woman-up opportunity for the team's first goal, and 40 seconds later Charlotte Skelly scored the equalizer off a feed from Ashley Quinn. Through the first 15 minutes, the score was knotted at two.

Spencer Kirsch picked up right where she left off a game ago, scoring twice in the second frame. She cashed in on a free position attempt at 12:55 to give Kenyon its first lead, but the Cardinals battled back with two straight to regain the advantage.

In what would tie the largest scoring run of the game, the Owls responded with three straight goals in less than two minutes. Kirsch found the net again at 4:12 before Bridgette Cassidy scored 50 seconds later to regain the Kenyon lead. Cassidy came back and assisted on another Mason woman-up goal at 2:30 to give her team a two goal lead. The Cardinals scored at 1:27, but at the break the Owls were up 6-5.

Out of the break, Mason scored her third extra attacker goal of the game to restore a two-goal lead for Kenyon, tying the largest advantage of the day. St. John Fisher scored two straight to tie game game at seven, but Cassidy scored her second goal to put her team ahead again.

Three more Cardinals goals to close the third and open the fourth gave St. John Fisher a 10-8 lead with 13 minutes to play. Ashley Auerbach and Skelly scored for Kenyon in the fourth to tie the game at 10 with five minutes remaining. Each team had great chances down the stretch, but the Cardinals got the ball last, scoring with just three seconds left to give the Owls their second loss of the season.

Mason stood alone at the top of the stat sheet with four points, while also grabbing seven draw controls and causing two turnovers, all team highs. Kirsch and Cassidy each netted two goals and dished out one assist, placing them second in points. Meagan Lacombe had a strong outing in between the pipes, saving eleven shots for a .500 save percentage.

Kenyon will take on host Colorado College at 6:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, March 5 before heading back east for two games in Michigan.
