Owls claim two more wins in Hawaii

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The Kenyon College softball team put together steady pitching and powerful hitting Tuesday to sweep a pair of games on the third day of the Ulili Softball Invitational at the Sand Island Softball Complex. The Owls rallied for a 6-5 win over Occidental College and then blew out Dickinson College, 11-1, in five innings.

Like yesterday's game with Occidental, the fireworks happened late in the contest. With Tigers holding a 4-3 lead after six innings of play, Kenyon was down to its last inning. After a strikeout to start off the frame, Kenyon looked to junior Keala Montgomery, who answered the call with a solo home run over the left field wall. That homer, Montgomery's first of the season and second of her career, tied the game at 4-4.

The Owls weren't quite finished, though. First-year Leah Schlissberg drew a walk, and senior Maeve McLaughlin drove her home with a triple. McLaughlin then came home to score Kenyon's sixth run on an Occidental error.

The Tigers got one run in the bottom of the seventh, but Kenyon pitcher Kylie Hamm slammed the door there. Hamm went the distance, giving up five runs, but just one earned. She yielded seven hits, didn't walk a batter, and didn't strike one out.

Earlier in the game, Kenyon scored twice in the first inning and once more in the third inning. In the first, Leah Kuban singled home Montgomery and Peyton Green doubled home Kuban. In the third, McLaughlin singled home Schlissberg.

Kuban led the Owls with three hits in game one, McLaughlin had two, and Montgomery had two, including the game-tying home run.

The hitting didn't stop in game two, as the Owls amassed 12 more hits, giving them 23 on the day. The top of the team's lineup continued to be the catalyst. Montgomery, Schlissberg, McLaughlin, and Kuban combined to go 7-for-11 with five runs scored and eight RBI. McLaughlin had three more RBI, as did Schlissberg.

The Owls moved ahead of Dickinson, 1-0, in the bottom of the first inning. That run was produced when Montgomery led off with a single, stole second, and later scored on a single from Kuban.

In the pitchers circle, sophomore Izzy Akin went all five innings to pick up the win. She allowed just one earned run on four hits. She did not walk a batter and she struck out five.

Kenyon broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The big knock came from McLaughlin, who ripped a three-run, bases-loaded double to left field.

When the bottom of the fifth rolled around, the Owls put the game away with a six-run outburst. Emma Cashell got the first of those six runs home with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Montgomery drew a bases-loaded walk. Schlissberg then ended it with a three-run triple. She came around to score the final run on a Dickinson error at the end of the play.

The Owls are now 7-5 and have two more games left in the Invitational. Those games will take place Thursday. They'll play Occidental one more time and then finish up with a final contest against University of Minnesota Morris.
