Owls fall to Flying Dutch on way back to Gambier

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team faced off against Hope College on Wednesday night as the team will make two stops in Michigan to end the spring break stint before heading back to Gambier for a five game homestand.

The Flying Dutch pounced on the Owls from the opening draw, springing an early lead that couldn't be overcome, eventually falling 5-17.

Hope came out of the gates firing, scoring four goals in the first 15 minutes. Kenyon had an excellent chance off the opening draw from the stick of Ashley Auerbach, but the Dutch's Samantha Smith thwarted any early scoring attempts. The Owls had two more shots on cage in the quarter, one from Spencer Kirsch and another from Auerbach, but the keeper kept the visitors off the board to put Kenyon in a 4-0 hole.

The Flying Dutch added four more goals in the second before the Owls broke through, as Kirsch converted on a free-position attempt at 2:02 in the half for her ninth goal of the season. That would be the only tally of the half for Kenyon, who ended the first down 1-8.

The Owls' best stretch came in the third quarter, as the squad was able to find the net three times. Charlotte Skelly netted her seventh goal of the season with a feed from Elena Zuvekas to set the score at 11-2, as Hope scored thrice to start the half.

Bridgette Cassidy cashed in on a woman-up advantage at 7:08, and Kirsch scored her second of the day with 19 seconds in the third with an assist from Ashley Quinn. However, after 45 minutes, the Dutch had taken a 13-4 lead.

Auerbach added a free-position goal at 11:54 in the fourth, but it would be Kenyon's last score of the day, as Hope found the net four more times to cement the 17-5 final.

Meagan Lacombe ended the game with seven saves at a .292 clip. Zuvekas, Cassidy and Cecily Torres were tied at the top with three ground balls.

The Owls will end the spring break slate on Friday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m. against Kalamazoo College.
