Kenyon swarms Kalamazoo to end road trip

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team wrapped up its spring break schedule on Friday night, taking on Kalamazoo College on the road before a long homestand.

A six-goal first quarter from the Owls was just what the team needed to gain an early lead, an advantage that they carried for the rest of the game to take a 23-5 win back to Gambier and end their trip on a high note.

Kenyon opened the game fast, scoring the first goal under 30 seconds in, as Spencer Kirsch kept up her strong stretch with another goal. Ashley Quinn netted her goal of the season at 10:16, but Kalamazoo struck back on a free position attempt to get their first point on the board.

The Owls responded with a four-goal run in a little over a minute to balloon its lead to 6-1. Delaney Champeau got the party started at 5:47, and Charlotte Skelly came back just over 20 seconds later with a goal on an assist from Ashley Auerbach. Bridgette Cassidy scored twice at 5:07 and 4:28 to cap off an efficient stretch for the visitors. The Hornets scored two of their own down the stretch, but Kenyon was ahead 6-3 after 15 minutes.

Just like in the first, the Owls sprung to a great start in the second quarter as well, netting seven straight goals while holding Kalamazoo scoreless. Kirsch went back to back to start the run to make it 8-3, and Susannah Zimmerman and Ella Baxter each scored to give the team a 10-3 lead. Later in the quarter, Skelly and Champeau each added their second of the game and Kirsch added her fourth to send it to the half 13-3.

Kenyon kept the run going after halftime, rattling off 5 more unanswered goals in the third quarter. Elena Zuvekas netted two goals, while Kirsch and Skelly each added to their totals for the game. Ella Rigola got involved at 1:05 to set the score at 18-3 after 45 minutes.

Kirsch, Skelly and Zuvekas all ended the game with five points to tie for the team lead. Cecily Torres led the team on the defensive end with three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Meagan Lacombe registered six saves and a .667 save percentage. Persia Shipman came in for relief and made one save.

Rigoli scored twice more to start the fourth and complete her hat trick and give the Owls a 20-3 lead. Kalamazoo scored at 10:20 in the quarter to end a 14-goal run for the visitors. Skelly, Cassidy and Zuvekas tacked on goals for Kenyon to close the game 23-5, giving the Owls their highest offensive output of the season.

Kenyon will now host five straight home games from the Field at Benson Bowl, the first on Saturday, March 21 at 3:00 p.m. against Adrian College.
