Owls land in fifth at Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – After two weeks off the course over spring break, the Kenyon College men's golf team returned to action over the weekend for the three round Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational from the Pine Lakes course on Jekyll Island. 

After a five over par first round that put the team in 12th, the Owls answered with rounds of 12 and nine under par to climb up the 30 team leaderboard and finish tied for fifth at -16. 

Jonathan Oakes led Kenyon and finished in a tie for eleventh overall with a seven under par score. Oakes scraped together a two over 74 in round one with six birdies, four of which coming on the front nine. He poured in four more birdies and an eagle in Saturday's second round to post 69 (-3) before turning in the team's best round of the tournament. 

He carded a six-under 66 on Sunday that included five birdies and an eagle on the par five 18th hole to wrap up the tournament. For the week, he ranked tied for eighth in birdies, recording 15 circles. 

Connor Gray and Adrian Jordan each finished at two-under for the week, good enough for a T34 finish. Jordan opened play with a decently clean 75 (+3) in which he made 15 pars and a birdie. His best round of the tournament came on Saturday, where he started off the day with three birdies in a row en route to a 67 (-5). With four birdies and four bogeys, he ended the weekend with an even 72. 

Gray made three birdies and an eagle and shot 72 in the opening round before carding back to back 71s (-1), his best scores of the weekend. He made three birdies on Saturday and four on Sunday to close the week in red figures. 

Rafael Frias IV was next on the Owls leaderboard, finishing at one under par. He opened play on Friday with a 76 (+4) which included four birdies on the back nine. On Saturday, he made five birdies to shoot 69, his best round of the tournament, and followed it up with a 70 (-2) on Sunday. For the week, he finished tied for 45th in the 150 player field. 

Rounding out the Kenyon field was Jaiden Koonar, who slotted in at T83 with a +6 score for the three rounds. He drained five birdies in the first round and four on Saturday, but resulted in 72 and 73 on the scorecard. Sunday's 77 included three birdies. 

For the tournament, the Owls ranked second in par three average (3.12), seventh in par four scoring (4.09) and fifth in par fives (4.57). They also ranked third in eagles (4) and birdies (60) for the weekend. 

Kenyon will be back on the course Monday, April 6 for the three round, two day Capitol City Invitational from Capitol Hill Golf Course in Prattville, Alabama.
