Owls take two from JCU in NCAC twinbill

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Junior Kylie Hamm pitched a gem in Saturday's first game and then Kenyon College bats went to work in the second game, as the host Owls softball team claimed a doubleheader sweep against conference newcomer John Carroll University.

The Owls (11-11, 2-0 NCAC) took game one by a 5-3 count and then rallied from three runs down to take game two, 10-7. The games were the first two North Coast Athletic Conference contests of the 2026 season for Kenyon and the first-ever NCAC games for the Blue Streaks (7-6, 0-2 NCAC), who just joined the conference this academic year.

Hamm had just one hiccup early in the first game, as she hit the first batter she faced. That batter, who turned runner, stole second base, and then scored after two ground outs. Despite trailing 1-0, Hamm and the Owls did not give up a hit until the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kenyon first-year Leah Schlissberg ripped a two-run single that scored Madison Buckwalter and Kinsey White, giving the Owls a 2-1 edge. John Carroll, however, capitalized on a Kenyon error in the sixth inning and posted a two-run double of its own.

Trailing by one run again, Kenyon flipped the script and used two John Carroll errors to score three times and take the lead for good. Peyton Green doubled and scored the tying run. Emma Cashell walked and scored the go-ahead run, and Brooke Avila singled and later scored the game's final run.

Hamm, who now sports a 6-3 record, threw all seven innings and gave up just four hits and one walk. She struck out three and just one of the three runs John Carroll scored off of her was earned.

Kenyon had six hits in game one with Avila accounting for two of them.

Game two had a much different look, as Kenyon bombarded the Blue Streaks with 19 hits, just one shy of the team's season best mark. At the heart of the order, sophomore Leah Kuban was 4-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Two of those RBI came off a two-run home run in the first inning, helping lift the Owls to an early 4-0 lead.

At the top of the Kenyon order, Keala Montgomery was 3-for-5 with one run scored. Avila had another two hits in game two, as did Green, Cashell, White, and Maeve McLaughlin. Eight of Kenyon's nine starters scored at least one run and both Cashell and Buckwalter tallied a pair of RBI.

After their four-run first inning, the Owls went scoreless over the next four innings, while stranding six runners on base. That trend gave plenty of space for the Blue Streaks to score runs in the three of the first six innings and build a 7-4 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kenyon erupted for six runs on six hits and one John Carroll error. After Montgomery led things off with a double, she later came around to score on a wild pitch. Four batters later, a single from Kuban scored Schlissberg to pull the Owls within one run.

Green then singled and Cashell did likewise, scoring the tying run. Green later scored on a John Carroll error and then Buckwalter put the game away by lacing a two-run triple down the right field line.

Izzy Akin, Kenyon's game two starting pitcher, earned the win to improve to 3-4. She worked all but seven outs, giving up six hits, walking two, and striking out three.
