Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Down to the last match, Tartans edge Owls

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The No. 17-ranked Tartans from Carnegie Mellon University pulled off a mild upset Thursday, dealing the previously undefeated and No. 13-ranked Kenyon College men's tennis team, 4-3. The battle, which went down to the last match, played out at the United States Tennis Association's National Campus.

Things got underway with Carnegie Mellon owning the three doubles matches. At No. 1, the Tartans posted a lopsided 6-1 win, and then, at No. 3, they added a 6-3 victory to take the team doubles point. With that point in hand, the No. 2 doubles match was abandoned with Carnegie Mellon holding a 5-4 edge.

In singles play, the Tartans got another surprisingly one-sided win at No. 1, as Alex Feise, the No. 8-ranked singles player in NCAA Division III, rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Kenyon senior Paulo Pocasangre Kreling.

Now trailing 2-0 on the team scoreboard, the Owls pulled back into the match, evening things up with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. At No. 2, junior Alejandro Gonzalez tied the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Diogo Tinoco. Prior to that, first-year Maximo Llamas Castellanos tallied Kenyon's first point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 match against Raghav Jangbahadur.

Carnegie Mellon added a win at No. 5 singles, leaving just two matches, both of which Kenyon needed to win. The Owls notched one of those two wins when Juozas Cioladis won his first set 7-6 (7-5) in his No. 4 match against Takeshi Koey. Cioladis then pulled ahead 4-1 in the second set before taking it 6-3 and tying up the team score at 3-3.

That left just the No. 6 singles match between Kenyon first-year Stylianos Papamichael and Carnegie Mellon's Michael Larionov, also a first-year. Larionov claimed the first set 6-3, but Papamichael responded by winning the second, also 6-3. In the third and deciding set, Papamichael twice broke serve to move ahead 4-2, but Larionov finished strong, taking the next four games, winning the match, and sealing the team victory for the Tartans.

The loss was the first of the year for Kenyon (9-1), while the win improved Carnegie Mellon to 7-0.
