Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Garnet use fast start to overcome Owls

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The No. 19-ranked Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team raced out to a 6-1 lead Saturday and held off the visiting Kenyon College Owls, who closed to within a goal, but ended up on the losing side of a 13-9 non-conference decision at Clothier Field.

The defeat brought an end to Kenyon's difficult spring-break schedule in which the Owls faced three nationally-ranked teams. The Owls will head back to Gambier with a 3-4 record, while the Garnet used the win to improve to 5-1.

Swarthmore cut through the Kenyon defense early and often. Four different goal scorers put a point on the board in the first quarter. Kenyon senior Gavin Gumucio netted the Owls' first goal at the 3:22 mark.

In the second quarter, the Garnet racked up two more to take a 6-1 lead. This time, however, Kenyon had an answer as Lucas Flynn and Mike Kapral scored back-to-back tallies to get the Owls within three. Before the break, each team tacked on one more and the Garnet held a 7-4 halftime lead.

Kenyon's last goal of the second quarter came from senior David Chintala, who opened third-quarter play with two more. That outburst brought Kenyon within one, at 7-6, with 10:29 showing on the third-quarter clock.

From there, Swarthmore's balanced attack went back to work and recorded four of the game's next five goals to take an 11-7 advantage into the early stages of the final quarter. The Garnet, who outshot Kenyon, 48-31, ended up having seven different players account for their 13 goals. Ronan Butler led the way with three goals and an assist.

Chintala, who tacked on another Kenyon goal in the fourth ended up with a game-high four scores. That moved his overall career total to 222 points, just 16 points shy of Kenyon's program record of 238 points set by Justin Martinich '02.

Kenyon moved within three goals of Swarthmore twice more in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer. Sophomore Alex Haag, who fired home Kenyon's final goal, had two on the day.

Defensively, senior Owen Breen scooped up a team-best five ground balls and forced a couple of turnovers for Kenyon. Behind him, senior goalkeeper Adam Hall made 11 saves.

The Owls have ahead of them a week-long break from competition. Their next game is to be played at home and is slated for Saturday, March 14 against Grove City College, a team that's currently 2-4, but receiving votes in national polls.
