Tigers pounce early, take two from Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Wittenberg University Tigers made themselves at home on Saturday at the Kenyon College Softball Complex. The visitors kicked off game one of a conference doubleheader with a 6-0 lead and then controlled game two with an early 10-0 advantage.

Those quick starts lead to 9-6 and 11-2 victories for Wittenberg, which improved to 15-11 overall and 5-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play. With the losses, Kenyon slipped to 14-16 overall and 3-3 in NCAC action.

To their credit, the Owls never threw in the towel. Trailing 6-0 and then 8-2 in game one, the Kenyon team made a run at the Tigers. A wild pitch and an RBI single from Kinsey White led to the Owls' first two runs in the bottom of the second inning. One inning later, White hit a bases-loaded single to right field, scoring two more runs and pulling the Owls closer, at 8-4.

In the bottom of the fourth inning Keala Montgomery ripped her second home run of the season and, in the bottom of the fifth, Leah Kuban went yard to get Kenyon within two runs. Kuban's home run was her ninth, which tied the Kenyon program's single-season mark for long balls.

That, however, would be as close as the Owls would get. After shutting down the Tigers offense for three innings, Kenyon pitcher Kylie Hamm gave up a base-loaded hit-by-pitch to account for the game's final tally. Hamm (8-4) ended up taking the loss. She tossed all seven innings, while allowing six earned runs on 16 hits and a couple of walks.

In game two, the Tigers attacked even quicker, jumping all over Kenyon starter Izzy Akin (3-5) for three runs in the first, one in the second and then four in the third. Reliever Allison McCutchen replaced Akin in the third inning, but the Tigers tagged her for two more runs, opening up a 10-0 cushion.

Kenyon got two of those runs back in the bottom of the third inning, which Meave McLaughlin led off with a double. Brooke Avila then reached on a Wittenberg error, which allowed McLaughlin to score. One batter later, Peyton Green stroked a single to center that scored Avila.

The Tigers tacked on one more run in the fourth inning off Kenyon's Jillian Messinger and pushed their lead to nine runs. Kenyon failed to score over the final two innings and the game ended in the fifth frame due to the run rule.

Over the course of the doubleheader, White had the best day at the plate for Kenyon. She went a combined 4-for-4 with three RBI. Green added a combined 3-of-6 performance with one run and one RBI.

Kenyon will get right back to work on Sunday, hosting another conference doubleheader against Denison University (9-15, 2-4 NCAC). Game one gets underway at 1 p.m.
