White tallies record as Owls split with Quakers

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Highlighted by some spectacular play from Kinsey White at third base, the Kenyon College softball team got solid defense and timely hitting to defeat the WIlmington College Quakers, 6-5, in Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader. Game two went in a completely different direction, however, as the host Owls committed six errors in an 8-2 loss.

In game one, Kenyon's two hottest bats came through once again. Senior Maeve McLaughlin, hitting out the third spot in the Owls' lineup, went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBI. Right behind her in the batting order was sophomore Leah Kuban, who was 3-for-4 with two more RBI.

White, a sophomore, chipped in with a game-tying RBI hit, but more importantly, she handled the hot corner with expertise. White had 11 chances at third base and made two put-outs and set a new program single-game record with nine assists.

The two teams went back-and-forth on the scoreboard, with Kenyon scoring first, only to be countered by a three-run second inning from Wilmington. McLaughlin and Kuban came through with RBI hits in the third inning to tie things up at 3-3. McLaughlin then tacked on another RBI hit in the fourth to give the Owls a one-run edge.

When things got to the seventh inning all square at 5-5, Kenyon reliever Allison McCutchen, who worked three innings overall, shut down the Quakers on a single, a pop up, and two groundouts.

In the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Anna Engler led things off for Kenyon with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Lily Colvin. Wilmington was able to record the next two outs, but when Kenyon leadoff hitter Keala Montgomery came to the plate, she laced a double off the centerfield wall, allowing Colvin to come all the way around to score the winning run.

McCutchen, who gave up just three hits and one walk, struck out two and earned her second straight win in relief, improving her season record to 2-4.

Both Montgomery and Brooke Avila added two hits apiece to the Kenyon game-one hit total, which reached 13.

Defensive lapses took Kenyon completely out of game two. An error on a throw to first base in the third inning opened the gates for three unearned runs to score. Then in the fifth, things really unraveled for the Owls. Wilmington led off the inning with a solo home that chased Kenyon starter Jillian Messinger from the pitcher's circle. What followed was five Kenyon errors and four unearned runs for the Quakers, who forged ahead 8-1.

The Owls' only two runs of the game were scored in the bottom of the fourth and seventh innings. In the fourth, Peyton Green doubled home Avila. In the seventh, Montgomery ripped her sixth triple of the season to bring home Lauren Klein, who singled one batter earlier.

Both McLaughlin and Kuban were held hitless in game two. That brought a halt, at 17, to McLaughlin's hit streak, which was the third-longest streak in program history and included a dozen multi-hit games. Meanwhile, Kuban's two RBI in game one improved her Kenyon single-season record to 44, just six shy of tying the conference record.

The split put Kenyon's overall record at 16-18 as the Owls head toward their final six conference games of the season. In the other dugout, Wednesday's results moved Wilmington to 12-14.
