Game Recap: Baseball |

Kenyon falls twice in the ninth to John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Kenyon College baseball team headed north on Wednesday afternoon for its first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) road games of the season, taking on conference newcomer John Carroll University.

The Owls had leads in both games after back and forth scoring on either side, but could not convert in the end, falling in walkoff fashion twice for a 7-8 loss in game one and 9-10 in game two.

Kenyon got a good jump on John Carroll in the second game, scoring three runs in the second inning all while down to its last out. Two singles from Matt Ardell and Colbie Corpuz and a walk from Bryce McNair loaded the bases for Aaron Moss, who singled to right field and scored two. Tyler Nee doubled in the gap on the next at bat to send McNair around for the early advantage.

Theo Canning and Isaiah Vance combined for a great start on the mound, with Canning getting the start and dealing two innings with two strikeouts and two runs. Vance came in for relief and dealt three innings of scoreless baseball, giving up just one hit. Through five innings, Kenyon held a 3-2 lead.

The Owls added to their advantage in the top of the sixth with four runs, the team's best inning in either game. Ben Russell notched a two RBI double that got the scoring started, and an RBI groundout from Bryce McNair and a single from Tyler Nee scored the other two, giving Kenyon a 7-2 lead. However, two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings put the Blue Streaks right back in the mix at 7-6.

In the eighth, Kenyon got a huge break as the team took advantage of an errant throw when Ben Zimmerman's grounder was not turned for a double play with the bases loaded and one out. Parker Ellis scored easily, and smart baserunning from Aaron Moss earned the Owls another run, gaining a 9-6 advantage with six outs to go.

Just when the Owls looked poised to get the win, John Carroll came back with some magic of their own. A leadoff homer quickly shrunk the lead to two, and after a double and a passed ball in the outfield that led to an inside the park home run, the game was knotted at nine.

In the top of the ninth, Kenyon had runners on second and third with one out, but back to back strikeouts left the scoreboard empty into the bottom of the ninth. A leadoff walk and a bunt put a runner in scoring position for the Blue Streaks with one out. A flyout moved a runner to third with two outs, and an infield single gave John Carroll the win 10-9.

Back in the first game, John Carroll struck first with two runs in the bottom of the third. Chris Cannuscio got the start for the Owls, and gave up five hits and two runs through the first three innings. Ardell smoked a double that scored three runs to give Kenyon the lead in the top of the next inning, scoring McDill, Guiliana and Nee. Ardell crossed the plate on the next at bat by way of an error, giving the Owls a 4-2 advantage.

Three runs in the bottom of the fourth and two in the sixth led to the Blue Streaks' biggest advantage of the game, leading 7-4 with nine outs remaining for Kenyon. In the ninth, the Owls offense charged again to toe the game at seven. Giuliani was hit to lead off the inning, and McDill ripped a double to put runners at second and third. A Zack Webber single got the scoring started, and stole second to put himself into scoring position. Down to their last out, Ben Russell doubled to score McDill and Webber and tie the game at seven. The excitement was quieted in the bottom of the ninth, as John Carroll scored on a wild pitch to take the game 8-7.

For the day, the Owls tallied 22 hits and drew 12 walks. Ardell led the team with six hits across the two games and scored three runs, while Russell led the team with four RBIs. On the mound, Sam Howell led all visiting arms with three strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitched.

Kenyon's record falls to 11-14 on the season and 0-6 in the NCAC. The Owls will be back on the diamond on Saturday, April 11 for another road doubleheader against DePauw University, with first pitch at noon.
