Kenyon falls to Rhodes 5-1

DANVILLE, KY– The Kenyon College field hockey team traveled down south for a match up with the Rhodes College Lynx. A 5-1 loss for the Owls took the squad to a record of 2-3 (1-0), before beginning the bulk of conference play yet to come. 

Rhodes (5-1) continued an offensive barrage throughout the entire game, out shooting the Owls 20 to six. The Lynx put 14 of their shots on target with Sophia Chaves and Lucy Baker making a combined nine saves. 

Two early goals for the Lynx created a challenge for the Owls, as they played nearly the whole game from behind. Rhodes forward Bella Spina scored quickly in the second minute of play with a shot past Chaves. Shortly after in the fourth minute of play the Owls committed a foul resulting in a penalty corner opportunity for Rhodes' Meredith Dunn who put her squad up 2-0 with 55 minutes to play. Kenyon would hold Rhodes to a 2-0 game heading into the half.

Offensively, Kenyon struggled only taking six shots, Maren Lawrence, Zady Hasse, Hendrika Maher, Gigi Johnson and Ada Wigfield each put a shot on target. Maher was the only Owl to find the net on Sunday. With the Owls down 4-0 Maher buried a shot into the back of the net to cut the lead to 4-1. One more goal for Rhodes in the final minutes sealed the game with a score of 5-1. 

Kenyon returns home for a a game against Oberlin on September 26, at 12:00 PM for North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.
