Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Kenyon falls to Rhodes 5-1

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Kenyon College field hockey team traveled south for a match up with the Rhodes College Lynx. A 5-1 loss for the Owls took the squad to a record of 2-3 (1-0), before beginning the bulk of conference play.

Rhodes (5-1) continued an offensive barrage throughout the entire game, out-shooting the Owls 20-6. The Lynx put 14 of their shots on target with Kenyon goalkeepers Sophia Chaves and Lucy Baker making a combined nine saves.

Two early goals for the Lynx created a challenge for the Owls, as they played nearly the whole game from behind. Rhodes forward Bella Spina scored quickly in the second minute of play with a shot past Chaves. Shortly after, in the fourth minute of play, the Owls committed a foul resulting in a penalty corner opportunity for Rhodes Meredith Dunn, who put her squad up 2-0 with 55 minutes to play. Kenyon would hold Rhodes to a 2-0 game heading into the half.

Offensively, Kenyon struggled only taking six shots. Maren Lawrence, Zady Hasse, Hendrika Maher, Gigi Johnson and Ada Wigfield each put a shot on target. Maher was the only Owl to find the net on Sunday. With the Owls down 4-0, Maher buried a shot into the back of the net to cut the lead to 4-1. One more goal for Rhodes in the final minutes sealed the game with a score of 5-1.

Kenyon returns home for a a game against Oberlin on September 26, at 12:00 p.m. in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.
