GAMBIER, Ohio (October 12, 2011) The Kenyon College Ladies volleyball team got a first-hand look at why the Wittenberg University Tigers are currently ranked as the No. 4 team in the nation. The Tigers overcame an initial surge from Kenyon and rattled of a three-set sweep by scores of 25-16, 25-5, and 25-14.
The Ladies (10-13, 4-5 NCAC) gave the Tigers a run for their money in the first set.
Sierra DeLeon and
Mary Myers each threw down a couple of kills and helped the Ladies catch the Tigers at 8-8. Wittenberg (20-2, 9-0 NCAC) quickly regrouped, however, and strung together the next seven points to go ahead 15-8. Kenyon, which fell further behind at 18-10, tried to stop the momentum with a timeout, but the margin was too much for the Ladies to overcome.
Set two took just 16 minutes to complete and was quite forgettable for Kenyon. Trailing just 7-4 in the early stages, the Ladies succumbed to a pair of nine-point rallies from the Tigers. With Hannah Riley serving, Wittenberg went up 16-4. Kenyon was able to steal the next point, but then Christina Gilene took over service for the Tigers, who closed things out with another nine-point streak.
Senior
Laura Harris stood out in the third set for Kenyon, but her efforts weren't enough to stop the hard-charging Tigers. Harris had a couple of kills in the final set and also served up a couple of aces during a 4-0 swing for the Ladies.
Harris was one of four Ladies with two kills on the evening. DeLeon and
Ana Maricic shared the team led with three kills apiece.
Freshman
Hannah Shank had a match-high 12 assists and Myers led all players with 12 digs.
