Kenyon tops Oberlin to cap historic season

Kelly Heilman
OBERLIN, Ohio (October 29, 2011) The Kenyon College volleyball team completed its most successful season in eight years with a 3-1 decision over Oberlin College Saturday afternoon. The win set the Ladies' final record at 14-17 to give them the program's best win-total since the 2003 team also posted 14 victories.

Additionally, Kenyon concluded the year 8-8 against North Coast Athletic Conference opponents. The eight NCAC wins are the most ever produced by a Ladies team and makes the 2011 squad the first since 1999 to post a .500 record in conference play.

Kenyon had to withstand a scrappy effort from the Yeowomen to reach the milestones. The Ladies edged Oberlin, 25-22, in the first set then lost a lopsided second game, 25-12. Kenyon gained control of the final two sets and posted 25-20 and 25-15 decisions to secure the win.

Sophomore Mary Jo Scott led the way on both ends of the floor with 13 kills and 12 digs. Senior Crystal Piras matched Scott's defensive contributions with a dozen digs of her own.

In addition to Piras, Kenyon received contributions from three other seniors in their final collegiate game. Mary Myers and Kelly Heilman (Bay Village, OH/St. Joseph Academy) secured prominent places in the Ladies record books with their performances. Myers threw down three kills, which gave her 962 for her career - the fifth-most in program history. Heilman dished out 25 assists for an even 1,300 and sixth-place all-time at Kenyon.

Sophomores Sierra DeLeon and Ana Maricic added to the offense with nine and eight kills, respectively. Maricic also had a huge game at the net with two solo and seven assisted blocks.
