DELAWARE, Ohio – Playing against the undefeated Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops, the Kenyon College Lords football team needed a near-perfect performance Saturday at Selby Field. Turnovers never allowed that scenario to materialize and the Lords wound up on the wrong end of a 33-14 final score.

Kenyon (3-3, 2-1 NCAC) turned the ball over five times. Ohio Wesleyan (6-0, 4-0 NCAC) took full advantage of those gifts from the Lords and converted four of the five turnovers into a combined 20 points.

The miscues started right from the start for Kenyon. On the team's opening drive, quarterback Dan Shannon was picked off at midfield by Leonard Gleaves, who returned the interception to the Lords' 36-yard line. Five plays later, Miles MacKenzie booted a 35-yard field goal for the Battling Bishops. That also was the start of a busy day for MacKenzie, who went on to add field goals of 21, 41, and 23 yards.

Kenyon ended up punting on its next possession and then Shannon was picked off again on the team's third possession. This time, Seth Swary returned the interception 67 yards for a touchdown and a 10-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

In the second quarter, roles reversed. Kenyon senior defensive back Will Clements intercepted Ohio Wesleyan quarterback Mason Espinosa at the Lords' 24-yard line. The Lords offense then moved from the air attack to the ground attack. Freshman running back Casey Beaudouin carried the ball seven times in a ten-play drive. He racked up 27 yards on the ground and with 4:17 showing on the clock punched one into the Battling Bishops' end zone from one yard out.

Momentum did not stay with Kenyon. Ohio Wesleyan needed just four passing plays to score another touchdown. The Lords then fumbled away their final drive of the half. Quentin Wright, who forced the fumble, also recovered it and carried it 47 yards for another Ohio Wesleyan touchdown. That put the Battling Bishops in front 24-7 at the half.

Kenyon started the second half of play with a Shannon to Carlo Gagliardo 43-yard touchdown pass, but that would be the end of the scoring for the Lords. Shannon finished the game with 21 completions and 178 passing yards in 37 attempts. Gagliardo led all receivers with ten catches for 127 yards.

The Lords outgained the Battling Bishops on the ground, 141 yards to 84 yards. Beaudouin chalked up 31 rushing yards and senior Brett Williams led the way with 78 yards on 19 carries. With Ohio Wesleyan struggling to run against the Kenyon defense, Espinosa went on to complete 25-of-39 passes for 277 yards. Like Shannon, he also tossed two interceptions. With Clements getting one of those interceptions, fellow senior Luke Bissinger snared the other.

The Lords' starting linebackers accounted for a total of 30 tackles throughout the game. Kolin Sullivan, Bradley Couts,  and Reed Franklin all had a team-high ten apiece. Andrew Allen and Marquis Johnson each added a sack.

Kenyon is now 3-0 in home games and 0-3 on the road. The Lords play next Saturday at DePauw University.
