GREENCASTLE, Ind. – A pair of big plays from senior
Carlo Gagliardo plus monster games from running back
Brett Williams and linebacker
Kolin Sullivan added up to the first road win of the season for the Kenyon College football team Saturday. With the trio giving DePauw University headaches, the Lords edged the Tigers, 21-19, to improve to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
It didn't take long for Kenyon to jump ahead of DePauw (1-6, 0-4 NCAC). The opening kickoff deflected off Williams' chest but bounced right to Gagliardo, who scooped it up and trucked 90 yards down the field for the touchdown. With a lead that only took 16 seconds to build, the Lords never trailed the rest of the game.
That's not to say Kenyon had it easy, though. The Tigers pieced together an 11-play, 73-yard drive for their own first-quarter touchdown at the 2:53 mark. DePauw missed the extra point to keep the Lords out in front with a slim 7-6 advantage.
Although the clock was winding down on the stanza, Gagliardo wasn't through with his heroics. Five plays later, he hauled in a
Dan Shannon pass from 53 yards out to return to the end zone for the second time in the opening period. Gagliardo caught just one more ball the rest of the afternoon to tally 73 receiving yards, but his quick start was exactly what Kenyon needed.
The flurry of scoring dissipated in the second quarter with neither team producing any points. Sullivan stalled two Tiger drives in the frame by generating a pair of takeaways for the Lords defense. The first was a momentum-shifting interception at the Kenyon one-yard line that kept DePauw from potentially tying the game early in the period. The next time the Tigers touched the ball, Sullivan forced a fumble near midfield and junior
Antonio Cataldo was there for the recovery.
Sullivan ended his afternoon as the game's top tackler with 18 take-downs to his credit. Cataldo also played a big role for the Lords with a season-high 11 stops.
The third quarter came and went with Kenyon maintaining its 14-6 lead. DePauw finally broke the scoring drought with 10:18 to go in the game when Armani Cato slipped across the goal line from two-yards out. The Tigers only got six points out of the deal because their two-point conversion attempt to knot the score failed.
With Kenyon's lead down to a slim, 14-12 margin, Williams, a senior, took command. His 26-yard return on the ensuing kickoff gave the Lords solid starting field position at their 39-yard line. Kenyon needed three plays to advance to the DePauw 30 then turned back to Williams. He carried the ball five times and finished off the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run that pushed the Lords' cushion out to 21-12. The points were important, but the 4:18 that ticked off the clock during the march left DePauw with 5:47 to post two scores.
The Tigers got one on their next possession, which ended at 3:04 with Cato back in the endzone. DePauw never got a chance at another because Kenyon closed out the clock thanks to a crucial rushing first down by Shannon and 19 more yards from Williams over five carries.
At the end of the day, Williams topped the 100-yard mark for the fourth time this year with 127 yards on 29 attempts. Shannon completed 11 of 21 passes for 151 yards.
