GAMBIER, Ohio – Senior quarterback
Dan Shannon threw for 176 yards and completed touchdowns tosses to three different receivers as the Kenyon College Lords moved to a perfect 3-0 at McBride Field after Saturday's 30-13 defeat of conference rival Oberlin College.
Shannon ended up completing 20-of-29 pass attempts for the Lords, who are now 3-2 overall and remain atop the North Coast Athletic Conference with a 2-0 mark. The Lords' current overall record is also its best since opening the first half of the 2006 campaign with three wins and two losses.
After the two teams traded a couple of unsuccessful possessions to open the contest, Shannon and the Lords got things going late in the first quarter. Capitalizing on an Oberlin fumble at the Yeomen's 21-yard line, the Lords needed just one offensive play to get on the scoreboard. That play was a 21-yard pass from Shannon to freshman tight end
Greg McIntosh who broke free in the slot and dashed into the end zone.
In the second quarter, the Lords put together a much more methodical drive, one that spanned 16 plays and 76 yards, while burning up 7:28 in game clock. That drive ended with Shannon delivering a 14-yard strike to junior receiver
Tyler Smith who put the Lords up 13-0 at the half.
After the break, it looked as if the Lords were going to put the game out of reach. On Kenyon's opening drive, the Lord got a big 55-yard run from senior
Brett Williams. Four plays after that, Williams waltzed to pay dirt from three yards out, giving Kenyon a 20-0 advantage.
The Lords' command then began to slip a bit over the next eight minutes. Oberlin (1-4, 0-3 NCAC) finally put together its first scoring drive of the game and moved within 13 points. The Yeomen's scoring play came on a 21-yard pass from Louis Poggiali to Dan Weintraub. When the Kenyon offense tried to answer that score, a Shannon pass was tipped and intercepted inside the Lords' territory. Four plays later, Moses Richardson was in the Kenyon end zone and Oberlin moved the score to 20-13 as the teams headed for the final quarter.
To their credit, the Lords regrouped and manufactured another scoring drive, this one ending on a 22-yard pass from Shannon to sophomore
Nick Gasbarro. Sam Howard kicked the extra point and added a 31-yard field on the Lords' next possession to put a cap on the day's scoring.
Six different Kenyon receivers ended up hauling in at least one pass. Senior
Carlo Gagliardo led the way with seven catches and 55 yards. Gasbarro had six for 50, McIntosh ended up with three catches for 43 yards, and Smith had two grabs for 18 yards. Williams had a catch and wound up with a game-high 117 rushing yards on 18 carriers.
Brandon January, also coming out of the backfield, had one catch and ran for 85 yards on 20 carries.
On the other side of the ball, the Kenyon defense held Oberlin to 111 rushing yards and 131 passing yards. Junior linebacker
Kolin Sullivan piled up a dozen tackles, two for losses, and also picked off a Poggiali pass.
Reed Franklin and
Cam Ventling had eight and seven tackles, respectively, while senior safety
Luke Bissinger had two tackles and another interception, his team-leading third of the year.
Next up for the Lords is a trip to Delaware, Ohio for a first-place conference battle with the undefeated Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops (5-0, 3-0 NCAC).
