GAMBIER, Ohio (April 22, 2012) The Kenyon College Ladies softball team out-hit the College of Wooster 20-17 in Sunday's conference doubleheader, but a rash of errors ended up taking Kenyon out of both games and allowed Wooster to escape with a 7-5 extra-innings, game-one win and a 7-6 win in game two.

Of the 14 runs Wooster scored in the two games combined, only five were earned. Nevertheless, the Fighting Scots left the Kenyon campus with a 21-11 overall record and a 7-5 North Coast Athletic Conference mark. On the flip side, the losses dropped Kenyon's records to 11-23 overall and 3-9 in conference play.

Wooster jumped ahead 3-0 in game one, but Kenyon got one run back in the bottom of the third inning when freshman Toni Miller singled home classmate Hayley Howard. Two innings later, Kenyon took its first lead of the day. Howard reached base on an infield single and moved to third base on a double hit by junior Jamie Samuel. When freshman Chelsea Delaney stepped the plate, she took the first Wooster pitch and belted it over the leftfield wall for a three-run homer and a 4-3 Ladies' lead.

The Kenyon women maintained that lead until Wooster was down to its last two outs in the seventh inning. The Fighting Scots then used two Kenyon errors and two singles to score two runs. Kenyon fought back in the bottom of the seventh inning and tied things up with an RBI groundout from junior Emily Prehoda.

A scoreless eighth inning gave way to a ninth in which Kenyon booted another ball and Wooster scored another two runs. This time, the Ladies did not have an answer and Wooster forged ahead for the win.

The cold and windy conditions certainly did not help out defensive play, but it only got colder and windier in game two.

The Fighting Scots struck first again, this time with unearned runs in the first and third innings. They also put up single digits in the fifth and sixth innings. Kenyon tied things up at 1-1 in the second inning and then got an unearned run in the fifth to square things up at 3-3.
In the sixth inning, Wooster moved ahead by a run and then capitalized on three more Kenyon errors in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-3 lead.

Kenyon did not hang its head. Instead, the Ladies charged back with three runs in their final at-bat. Freshman Maddy Stark stroked an RBI single and Samuel smashed a two-run double. With just one out, and Samuel representing the tying run at second base, Kenyon had a shot at extending the game. That, however, did not happen. The next two Ladies to the plate struck out, ending the game.

Both Howard and Samuel finished the doubleheader with four hits each. Howard scored three times and Samuel had a pair of RBI. Delaney, Miller, and Hannah Smith all tacked on three hits for the day.
