GREENCASTLE, Ind. (April 28, 2012) In their first softball doubleheader as part of the same conference, the DePauw University Tigers used home-field advantage to deal the Kenyon College Ladies a pair of losses Saturday. The Tigers, first-year members of the North Coast Athletic Conference, won by scores of 7-5 and 11-1.

Once again, the highlight for the Ladies on Saturday was the performance of junior Jamie Samuel, who found her power stroke and went 3-for-6 with five RBI and three runs scored. All three of her hits were home runs and she capped of her season with Kenyon records for batting average (.471), hits (66), doubles (19), RBI (41), and total bases (96).

Samuel didn't waste any time in getting right to work. After freshman Hayley Howard was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first inning of game one, Samuel jacked a two-run shot to right center. DePauw came back with four runs over the next four innings to take a 4-2 lead, but Kenyon pulled within one more run after junior Hannah Smith went yard in the top of the fifth inning.

In the sixth, Howard got on base via a single and Samuel got her home with another two-run homer, this time over the centerfield fence. That gave the Ladies a 5-4 lead, but it was one they could not maintain. DePauw rallied in the bottom of the inning for three runs off Kenyon starter Maddy Stark and held on for the 7-5 win.

Game two was not as balanced. The Tigers raced out of the gate with three home runs in the first inning and two more in the second. That led to a pair of five-run innings and eventually a five-inning victory for DePauw (26-10, 10-6 NCAC).

In the fourth inning of that second game, Samuel smacked her third home run of the day. Not only were those the first three home runs of the season for Samuel, but the first three in her Kenyon career. In addition to her offensive success, the Ladies also got two hits apiece from Liz PaterraChelsea Delaney, and Smith.

Kenyon ends the season with a 13-27 overall record and 3-13 NCAC mark.
