GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 21, 2012) Playing for the inside track in the race for the conference crown, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team gave host and nationally-ranked Denison University all it could handle for two quarters Saturday. The Lords, however, could not keep pace in the final two frames and had to stomach a tough 11-6 defeat.
Denison, ranked as the No. 7 team in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's latest national poll, got out to a fast start, scoring three times within the game's first five minutes. Sophomore Will Lowe recorded Kenyon's first goal at the 7:14 mark, but Denison answered back and closed out the first quarter with a 4-1 advantage.
Kenyon went on to dominate second-quarter play, out-scoring Denison 4-0 and taking a 5-4 lead into halftime. Lowe scored the first of those four Lords' goals. Classmate Ben Hayden scored next and was followed by a man-up goal from sophomore Caleb Florence, who tied the game at 4-4. Senior Geoff Akie then gave Kenyon the lead with a tally about two minutes before the half. Junior Chris Pappalardo assisted on both Florence's and Akie's goals.
Kenyon carried that momentum into the third quarter with another score from Akie, who now leads the team with 20 goals on the season. That, however, would be it for the Kenyon surge. Denison got back on the board at the 10:08 mark of the third quarter. That goal ignited a game-clinching 7-0 run for the Big Red, who improved to 11-1 overall and captured the North Coast Athletic Conference title with a perfect 5-0 record.
Kenyon, now 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the NCAC, will finish off its regular-season schedule with conference games against Oberlin College on the road Wednesday and against the College of Wooster at home Saturday.
