GAMBIER, Ohio – One week removed from an exhilarating end to a 24-game losing streak, the Kenyon College football team began a new kind of streak. With Saturday's 24-7 Homecoming win over the Hiram College Terriers, the Lords chalked up back-to-back victories for the first time since the 2009 season.
The win moved the Lords to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. That three-game record is the best start to a season since the 1998 Lords opened their campaign with an identical 2-1 mark. On the other sideline, Hiram departed McBride Field with an 0-3 overall record and a 0-1 mark in the conference.
The beginning of the game was a bit rough for both teams. Kenyon took the opening kickoff to its own 33-yard. The Lords decided to get aggressive on the first play and had quarterback
Dan Shannon unleash a long pass intended for
Carlo Gagliardo The pass was intercepted, but Hiram went to the air on its first offensive play, too, and Kenyon's
Luke Bissinger returned the favor with an interception of his own.
Following the turnovers, Kenyon took over at Hiram's 23-yard line. Senior running back
Brett Williams carried the ball four out of the next five plays and found the Terriers' end zone from five yards out. That boosted Kenyon to a quick 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest.
The Lords' next possession also resulted in points. A 10-play, 68-yard drive was capped off with a 28-yard field goal from sophomore
Sam Howard, who also kicked a 33-yarder in the third quarter and a 20-yarder in the fourth quarter.
In between Howard's first two field goals, Hiram managed to score its first touchdown of the year. Caleb Jones put together a nifty 15-yard scoring scamper that finished off the first half scoring with Kenyon leading 10-7.
While the Lords defense shut down the Terriers the rest of the way, the Kenyon offense continued to put together sustained drives that chewed up yardage and minutes. In the second half alone, Kenyon possessed the ball for 21 minutes, while Hiram had it for just nine. Total offense, for the whole game, was 296 yards for Kenyon and 185 yards for Hiram.
Williams wound up with 121 rushing yards on a workman-like 33 carries. He complemented his first quarter touchdown with a two-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown that put the game out of reach for Hiram. Shannon ended up completing 9-of-15 passes for 83 yards and Gagliardo led the receiving corps with three catches for 23 yards.
Chris Austin led the Hiram attack with 60 yards on 14 rushes, while quarterback Brendon Rehor completed 19-of-27 passes for 90 yards. That Terrier duo had difficulty all game in dealing with the Lords defense, which intercepted two passes and rang up seven tackles for losses, including one sack. Linebacker
Kolin Sullivan had a monster game for the Lords, as he piled up 14 tackles with three-and-a-half occurring behind the line of scrimmage. Linebacker
Reed Franklin accounted for the sack and defensive back
Zachary Morrow grabbed the second Kenyon interception.
Kenyon will try to keep its win streak intact next weekend as it heads to St. Louis, Missouri to take on the Washington University Bears (0-3) in a non-conference game.
