Box Score
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Senior receiver
Carlo Gagliardo grabbed ten passes for 138 yards and three touchdowns Saturday, but that performance alone wasn't enough to get the Kenyon College football team a victory over the host Washington (MO) University Bears, who capitalized on a couple of interceptions to seal a 28-23 victory at Francis Field.
Washington scored on both its first drive of the game and its first drive of the second quarter. When it looked like the rout was on, Gagliardo and quarterback
Dan Shannon stepped up for Kenyon on a quick, three-play scoring drive that cut the Bears' lead in half. The second play of the drive was a 25-yard pass to Gagliardo and the third play was another pass to Gagliardo. This time it was a 34-yard scoring strike, a career first for Gagliardo, a converted defensive back.
On the Lords' next drive, Shannon went to the air again, this time finding Gagliardo,
Casey Beaudouin, and
Nick Gasbarro on consecutive plays. The drive did not end in another touchdown, but a 21-yard field goal for
Sam Howard.
As time was winding down in the second quarter, Washington risked going for it on 4-and-6th from its own 32-yard line. The Bears did not convert and the 50 seconds left on the clock gave Shannon enough time to find Gagliardo again. This time around, the passing TD spanned 32 yards and gave the Lords a 17-14 lead at the break.
Kenyon (2-2) threatened once again on its first possession of the third quarter, but things backfired when Shannon was picked off by Ryan Bednar at the Washington16-yard line. Bednar then returned the pick 84 yards to give the Bears the lead for good.
The fourth quarter started with another Washington touchdown followed by the third and final Shannon to Gagliardo connection, which was a ten-yarder and pulled the Lords within 28-23 with 8:50 left in the game.
Over those last several minutes, Kenyon got two more cracks at regaining the lead, but one drive ended with an interception and the other with a fumble.
Senior running back
Brett Williams, who led the Lords in rushing coming into the game, felt a little bit under the weather and was held to 23 yards on seven carries. All seven carries occurred in the first quarter. Sophomore
Brandon January got the bulk of the Lords' carries, but he did not have much success either. The Bears held him to 27 yards on 10 attempts. In all, Kenyon had just 68 yards on the ground.
In the air, Shannon was 19-of-33 for 217 yards and three touchdowns. Following up on Gagliardo's big day, freshman
Blake Calcei snared three of Shannon's passes for 54 yards.
Washington's offense was paced by running back Chris Castelluccio, who racked up 99 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. Quarterback Dan Burkett was 17-of-26 for 149 yards and two scores. Drew Sexton was Burkett's main target and ended up with five catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. In all, Washington outgained Kenyon's offense, 344 yards to 285 yards.
The game marked the first time ever that Kenyon and Washington squared off on the gridiron.
