GAMBIER, Ohio – A strong run game bolstered by a stout defense led the Kenyon College Lords football team to a 31-14 victory over the Earlham College Quakers Saturday afternoon at McBride Field. The win snapped a 24-game losing streak for the Lords while extending Earlham's skid to 22 games.
Senior
Brett Williams paced the Kenyon offense with 194 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. His classmate and defensive back
Will Clements made two interceptions and led a Kenyon defense that pushed back the Quakers to a total of -19 yards in the rushing department.
Williams broke loose with the game's first score at the 2:32 mark of the first quarter. After taking a direct snap, he scampered to the right, found an opening, and bolted 61 yards for the Lords' first score of the year. On their next possession, the Lords put together a methodical 12-play, 72-yard drive that ended in another seven points. With 9:29 showing on the second-quarter clock, Kenyon sophomore
Brandon January ended the drawn-out drive with a three-yard touchdown run. He had seven carries for 43 yards during the drive and finished the game with 16 carries for 71 yards.
With the Lords' defense still pitching a shutout, Clements ended the Quakers' final first-half chance with the first of his two interceptions. When the Quakers began play in the third quarter, Clements notched his second pick. This time, however, the turnover led to Kenyon points. On the Lords' first play from scrimmage after the interception, quarterback
Dan Shannon took a pitch and then winged a 35-yard scoring strike to junior
Tyler Smith. Later in the quarter,
Sam Howard booted a 33-yard field goal and Kenyon moved ahead 24-0.
It took just a little more than a minute of the fourth quarter's time before the Lords struck again. This time Williams put together a 55-yard touchdown run that put Kenyon ahead 31-0. Earlham closed out the last nine minutes of the contest with its only two scores, but it was too little, too late for the Quakers (0-2).
With Williams and January leading the way, Kenyon (1-1) racked up a total of 291 rushing yards on 55 carries. In the air, Shannon completed 6-of-14 pass attempts for 72 yards and the touchdown to Smith. Earlham had 244 yards of passing, but with its negative rushing yardage, the Quakers managed just 225 yards of total offense.
On the defensive side, Clements was not the only one picking off passes. Senior
Luke Bissinger and junior
Sam McQuiston each snared an interception for the Lords. Junior linebacker
Kolin Sullivan led all Kenyon players with ten tackles and junior lineman
Cam Ventling racked up three quarterback sacks.
With their losing streak now terminated, the Lords will look forward to trying to put together back-to-back wins when they host Hiram College next Saturday at McBride Field. Prior to Saturday's victory over Earlham, Kenyon's last win occurred October 17, 2009. It was a 21-9 victory at Oberlin College.
