GAMBIER, Ohio – There could not have been a better time for the Kenyon College volleyball team to pull down its first win of the season than on Senior Day. That is exactly what the Ladies did with their straight-set victory over Allegheny College on Saturday afternoon at Tomsich Arena.
Sierra DeLeon and
Mary Jo Scott combined for 23 of the team's 38 kills to aid the Ladies in marking up the win column for the first time this year.
Kenyon (1-18, 1-4 NCAC) jumped out to a demonstrative lead in the first set, but it was the third where the energy levels were at their highest and the duo of Scott and DeLeon did most of their damage. Six of DeLeon's 14 total kills came in the third set while Scott posted four in a single set for the second time in the match. DeLeon also held her own at the service line with a pair of aces, both coming in the third.
Those that filled Tomsich Arena as a part of the College's Family Weekend and Senior Day festivities got rowdy as the Ladies pulled away from the Gators in the third set, setting up the table for the 3-0 win. With the game standing at 8-7 in favor of the Ladies, Hannah Shank served up three straight points while teammate Sandhya Bhasker tallied three consecutive service aces to help Kenyon break away, 18-9. In a fitting fashion, DeLeon scored each of Kenyon's final three points by way of two kills and an ace.
The mood was set back in the first set with Kenyon's demonstrative 25-14 win, their largest single set victory of the season. Katie Goulder finished the match with eight kills, but three of those came in a segment of the opening frame in which the Ladies began to distance themselves from the Gators. Goulder posted the remaining five kills in the second set as part of Kenyon's 25-23 win that put them up two games to none.
DeLeon's 14 kills continued to help her inch toward the millennium mark for total kills in a career. With the book on Saturday closed, DeLeon now stands at 933 career kills, 67 short of 1,000. She currently has 214 on the season through 18 matches. Last year, she tallied a career-high 267 kills in 22 matches played.
A total of five individuals were recognized before the start of the match for Senior Day. In addition to DeLeon and Scott, Melanie Couchman, Sandhya Bhasker, and Ana Maricic were honored for their contributions to the program. Bhasker, who is graduating early in May 2014, posted three digs on the day. Maricic has been injured since the opening week of the season and will graduate in May despite having an extra year of athletic eligibility. Couchman tallied a pair of digs in the match.
Other notable performers for the Ladies included Shank, who collected 26 assists and seven digs. McKenzie Mitchell led the team with 13 digs and three service aces.
Kenyon will have the next couple of days off and return to the court for their final home contest of the season on Friday, Oct. 25. The Ladies will host the Oberlin College Yeowomen at 5 p.m. at Tomsich Arena.
