LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kenyon College volleyball team wrapped up the regular season at Transylvania University at an all-day tournament. The Ladies endured a pair of 3-1 losses to the host Pioneers and Bluffton University. Sierra DeLeon posted a pair of double-digit kill counts for Kenyon.
In their first match of the day, Shank added the first of two double-double performances behind 27 assists and 15 digs against the Beavers of Bluffton College. The Beavers took sets one and two behind scores of 25-17 and 25-15 before the Ladies bucked the trend. Behind McKenzie Mitchell at the service line, Kenyon took eight of the first nine points to start the match off. She posted two aces at the line during the run. Later in the match, Kaitlyn Power added two more service aces to help distance the Ladies by as many as 13 points. However, a pair of setting errors by Brooke Ruffer sealed the win for the Ladies.
The Beavers came back in the fourth and overcame a four-point deficit en route to finishing the match. The Ladies benefitted from a trio of attack errors by Bluffton in addition to back-to-back kills from DeLeon, but then began an 8-1 run to regain the lead. Up 19-16, Bluffton outscored Kenyon 6-3 down the stretch and a block by Jenny Brown finished off Kenyon.
Mary Jo Scott led the Ladies with 13 kills in the opening match, accompanying DeLeon's 11-kill effort.
Kenyon closed the day with Transylvania and started off strong by taking the first set by a 25-20 count. The Ladies rolled out to a 6-2 lead early and slowly separated themselves to as much as an eight-point advantage. Seven of DeLeon's 14 kills were registered in the first set alone as she hit 7-for-16 with only one error for a .375 hit percentage. The Pioneers made it interesting by cutting the lead in half, but the Ladies held on for the win.
Transylvania collected itself and went on a run by rattling off wins in the next three games. In sets two and three, neither team held more than a two-point lead until the middle of the set before the Pioneers broke away. The fourth and final set was all Pioneers, as the hosts hit .400 as a team. The final scores of the match were 20-25, 25-17, 25-18, and 25-8.
Hannah Shank put together 39 assists and a pair of service aces in the match, going along nicely with her 11 digs. Scott led the Ladies with 22 digs.
Kenyon finishes up the regular season with a 2-22 overall record. Both of their wins came in North Coast Athletic Conference action and have granted them advancement to the NCAC Tournament as the number-seven seed. They will open up the tournament against number-two seeded Hiram College on Friday, Nov. 8 at host Wittenberg University. In action earlier this season, the Terriers beat Kenyon 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-18).
