BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. – The Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team opened its 2013 season by meeting the Albion College Britons Saturday at a neutral site. Although the Lords jumped out to a quick start, the Britons answered with five second-half goals to steal a 10-9 victory.
The Lords couldn't have asked for a better start. Goals from
Will Lowe,
Ross Mauck, and
Justin Coleman propelled the Kenyon team to an early 3-0 advantage. The Britons ended up scoring twice in the first quarter, but Kenyon had answers for both those goals. Coleman pumped in one more and Nicky Lenard tossed in another as the Lords ran out to a 5-2 lead after of quarter of action.
That three-point margin remained pretty much intact throughout the second quarter. Coleman and Lenard both scored again and
Fritz Waine fired in the final goal of the half to give Kenyon an 8-5 advantage at the break.
The Britons then made all the right adjustments on both sides of the field and took over the game in the second half. Over those final 30 minutes of play, Albion delivered 13 shots, 10 on goal, and forced the Lords into 13 turnovers. By the time the third-quarter came to an end, the game was knotted, 9-9.
Kenyon cranked up the offensive pressure in the fourth quarter, but could not find the net. Only two of the team's 10 fourth-quarter shots were on goal and goalkeeper Ian Monkman, who had five saves for the game, successfully corralled both on-target shots.
The game-winner for Albion (1-1) came with 7:13 left on the fourth-quarter clock. Tim Urso fired it in off an assist from Kevin O'Grady. It was Urso's second goal of the game. Joel Hedemark also had two goals, as well as two assists, for the Britons and Dan Genord led all Albion players with three goals.
For Kenyon (0-1), Coleman closed out the game with three goals and an assist. Lenard had two goals and an assist, while
Chris Pappalardo chalked up a pair of assists. In net,
Fletcher Franklin made ten saves for the Lords.
