GAMBIER, Ohio – Scoring six of the third-quarter's seven goals Wednesday at McBride Field, the Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team won its 2013 home opener, as well as its first game of the season. Four different Lords scored two goals each and the Kenyon men delivered a 9-7 rain-soaked win over the visiting Washington and Jefferson College Presidents.
Both offenses struggled early, not only against opposing defenses, but against Mother Nature, who blasted the teams with rain, wind, and cold temperatures. The result was a 3-3 tie at the end of the first half.
Following the halftime break, Kenyon got after it. The Lords fired in two goals within the third quarter's first four minutes. Washington and Jefferson answered with one to make the score 5-4 in favor of Kenyon, but from that point on the Presidents would never get any closer.
Four consecutive goals, two by senior
Mackie Avis, closed out the quarter with Kenyon in front 9-4. Senior
Chris Pappalardo and freshman Trey Trudell both scored in that Lords' run and both finished the game with two goals.
Justin Coleman also scored twice for the Lords and Patrick Kim accounted for the team's other tally.
Joseph Eck tried to rally Washington & Jefferson by sparking a 3-0 fourth-quarter run with two goals of his own. He ended up finishing the contest with three goals and two assists, but it wasn't enough for the Presidents (1-1) to catch Kenyon (1-2).
The Lords will now look to even out their record Saturday, when they host The University of the South in a non-conference game with a 1 p.m. start.
