FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Kenyon Ladies softball team began the day with some fireworks, generating their third walk-off winning performance of the season with a 3-2 defeat of New Jersey City University. The Ladies dropped an 8-1 decision to Wisconsin Lutheran College to finish the day with a doubleheader split.
While the Ladies' offense had been stale, having left six runners on through six innings of play, the spark generated in the bottom of the seventh was enough to drive Kenyon to its seventh straight and tenth overall win of the season.
In that final inning, the Ladies posted four consecutive base hits to erase their 2-0 deficit. Danielle Elizarraraz's blasted a leadoff double to right and Meredith Williams followed by driving her in with a RBI single. With the next at bat, senior Jamie Samuel tied the ball game with a double to center field. The Gothic Knights stuck with starting pitcher Ashley O'Beirne but after she recorded a harmless fly out, the Ladies made them pay for that decision. Lindsey Susolik stepped to the plate and found a hole through the left side of the infield for the walk-off, game-winning RBI single.
Their Ladies' win was their third walk-off win of the season and the first without going into extra innings.
Maddy Stark improved her undefeated mark in the pitchers circle to 6-0 behind her fifth complete game of the season. She went seven innings and struck out a season-high nine batters while allowing two runs on five Warrior hits.
In the team's second of two games, Kenyon fell by an 8-1 score to Wisconsin Lutheran College. The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first by using back-to-back RBI doubles from the middle of the lineup. The Ladies tagged on a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth behind a run-scoring single from Stark, but the Warriors pulled away with runs in the final three innings off of starter Emily Prehoda (3-1).
Kenyon will enter the final day of their stay at the 2013 Gene Cusic Classic with a 10-3 overall record. They will play two on Tuesday, March 12, beginning with Nazareth College at 9 a.m. and conclude their tour of Fort Myers, Fla. against Salem State University at 11 a.m.
