GAMBIER, Ohio – A Kenyon College offense that's been disrupted by injuries throughout the season came to life in the late stages of Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference men's lacrosse contest at McBride Field. Facing a four-goal deficit, the Lords outscored Oberlin College 5-1 in the fourth quarter and capped off a dramatic 7-6 victory.
The win was the Lords' fifth straight and third consecutive by one goal. It improved the Purple and White's overall mark to 6-4 and its NCAC mark to 2-0. On the other side of the field, the Yeomen sank to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in conference competition.
Oberlin entered the fourth quarter with a 5-2 lead, thanks in part to Alex Wagman, who scored three goals in the first half of play. Wagman struck again within the fourth quarter's first minute and gave his Yeomen squad what looked to be like a cushy 6-2 advantage.
The Lords started to chip away at the lead with back-to-back man-up goals from
Caleb Florence and Trey Trudell. Those tallies came at the 11:06 mark and the 6:24 mark of the fourth quarter. Both goals were assisted by
Chris Pappalardo.
Those goals, however, were not enough for Trudell and Florence. They each scored again to knot the game up 6-6. Trudell's goal, which was set up by
Fritz Waine, hit Oberlin twine with 4:39 showing on the clock. Eighteen seconds later, the Yeomen were flagged for a push and Florence wasted little time in capitalizing. He gathered in another pass from Pappalardo and fired in the equalizer from ten yards out.
With about 2:30 left, the Yeomen had two chances to reclaim the lead. The first chance was a Connor Jackson shot that was saved by Kenyon goalkeeper Patrick Shevelson. It was one of 11 saves on the day for Shevelson. The second chance was spoiled when the Yeomen let the ball roll out of bounds in the Kenyon zone with 47 seconds remaining.
From that point, Kenyon moved the ball into the attack zone and called a timeout. When play resumed,
Justin Coleman got the first look at a game-winner, but his shot sailed wide with 21 ticks left. On the reset, Trudell found Nicky Lenard who was unchecked in front of the Yeomen's crease. Lenard collected the pass, made one quick move, and tossed the ball past Oberlin goalkeeper Miles Brooke. That goal, scored with just 15 seconds left, proved to be the game-winner.
Kenyon senior
Mackie Avis matched the pair of goals scored by both Trudell and Florence. Avis scored once in the first quarter and once in the third quarter. Lenard added an assist to his game-winner and Pappalardo finished with four assists of his own.
