FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Kenyon College softball team cracked open its 2013 schedule Monday with two games at the Lee County Sports Complex. The Ladies started the day with a 4-2 win over the Dominican University Stars and ended the day with a 4-3 loss to the Wilmington College Quakers.
Game one didn't quite start the way the Ladies wanted. With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Dominican drew a walk and then banged out a double and a single to move ahead 2-0.
After that, Kenyon starting pitcher Maddy Stark settled down. She gave up just five hits the rest of the way and didn't allow another run.  She ended up pitching all seven innings, walking three, and striking out three.
While Stark took care of business in the middle of the diamond, the Kenyon bats got going in the third inning. Stark led off the Ladies' first offensive threat with a single up the middle. Hayley Howard doubled her home and later came around to score after Jamie Samuel stroked an RBI single to right field.
Stark again sparked another two-run inning for the Ladies in the top of the fifth. After drawing a walk, she scooted to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a single from Howard. Samuel was intentionally walked and Chelsea Delaney made the Stars pay with a two-run double that held up as the game-winner.
In game two against Wilmington, it was the Ladies who built up a 2-0 lead. In the top of the fourth inning, Lindsey Susolik hit a sacrifice fly that scored Samuel and moved Delaney to third base. One batter later, Emily Prehoda singled to left field, scoring Delaney.
The Quaker bats also heated up in the fourth. Wilmington put together a couple of hits, wrapped around a couple of walks and a Kenyon error, to score three times and take a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Quakers used a one-out walk, a sacrifice, and a single to score once more.
Liz Paterra ripped an RBI double to left field in the top of the seventh, but that was all the Ladies (1-1) could muster in their last turn at the plate.
On the day, Stark ended up with three hits and two runs for Kenyon. Five other Kenyon batters, including Delaney, had two hits in the two-game set. Both of Delaney's hits were doubles. She also scored once and had two RBI.
Kenyon's game-two starting pitcher was freshman Liz Ovieda. She took the hard-luck loss after giving up just one earned run and five hits. She walked five and fanned one.
The Ladies have another doubleheader on tap for tomorrow. They'll take on Clark University at 1 p.m. and then battle Eastern Nazarene University at 3 p.m.
